Ha all,

This forum has been a goldmine in my process of purchasing an engagement ring. We've decided that we want to go with and OEC diamond. A jeweler just sent me an Old European Cut 1.92 K/VS2 diamond and I was wondering if I could get some opinions on it. I've included the GIA report and a picture they has sent. I've also included the link do another ring posted a few days ago in this forum. This new diamond would set in the same exact setting. The other diamond is 1.85 I/VS2-SI1 (not GIA)

Thanks!

I can't read the GIA report, can you post the crown/pavilion/depth/table and lower halves, or attached a cropped image of just the diamond diagram showing the numbers?

Based only on the photos I love it. It looks just like my diamond, which is an Amercian Cut or an Early Ideal cut. My favourite variety.

Here is the cropped picture.

Here are a couple of new picture of the K stone in the setting.

Also, do you think there will be a huge noticeable difference between the K colored stone and the I colored stone in the platinum setting?

Thanks Dreamer. I put up a cropped picture and some new photos.

Oh my goodness, I love that diamond! I think a GIA K old cut will look pretty white. Old cuts have a way of masking color!

Yup. Love it. Such a rare cut! Appreciate it for that, as well as its inherent beauty.

You will see contrast, especially when you are in a yellow/beige or taupe room that will reflect in your large diamond but not the smaller side stones. My old cut diamond is a K color stone and I prefer to wear it with plan metal -- engraved and filigreed but without pave. But, that's me. The only thing that matters is whether you like the diamond set with side stones or not.

I think it looks beautiful! The faceting is gorgeous. I don't notice a huge color discrepancy in the setting...I think it fits very well.

Loooooove the diamond! I agree it looks like Dreamer's beautiful diamond! And I love lower colors in OECs. I have a GIA L and OECs mask lower colors so well.

I have been thinking about your diamond a little more and looking at the pics and lab report some more. In the interest of full information and education, and since you asked for opinions pre-purchase (right?) I do think there is the possibility of *some* under table leakage in this stone. I can maybe see it a little in the photos you posted, and the numbers also suggest its a possibility: For me, the "ideal" proportions for this type would have a table closer to 50% and a depth nearer to 60% (both my stone and Demelza's have those table/depths).

Since you have the stone in person, then you should look at it in different lighting and make sure you are happy with the light play, and that the under-table area does not go too dark, especially when the stone is tilted. You do not want to see too often a scenerio where the outer perimeter of the stone is bright and lively and the central facets are dark.

This is by no means a suggestion that the stone should be rejected. I think it looks really pretty in the pictures and this is my favourite type of old cut. But I am a perfectionist, and you asked for opinions! So there is mine :)) Just food for thought.

Thanks so much for everybody's input. A special thanks to Dreamer_D for the technical advice/education. I really do enjoy learning about all of this. I've made my decision and I'm going to purchase this diamond. I used Dave Atlas' guide to screening OEC diamonds and using the information from the GIA report this checks out as a class 1 diamond according to his guide: https://www.pricescope.com/journal/screening_chart_old_european_cut_diamonds

My only question now is how do I want it mounted. I'm definitely going with a Whitehouse Brothers Mounting in Platinum. Here's a link to the setting: http://www.whitehousebrothers.com/vintage-engagement-rings/101-8291.html

The other diamond I was looking at was already set. It was set in a way that there was almost a halo around it and you could see the milgrain looking down on the ring. I've posted a picture of this detail. The new diamond that I posted wasn't set yet. They just set the diamond in the setting so I could see what I looked like quickly. I am definitely going with the split prongs that are shown in the first picture. I just am not sure if I should go with the "halo" around the stone or not.

What do you guys think? You've been so very helpful.
