I'm considering a star sapphire that has these dimensions:

8.2 x 6 x 5.8 mm

Is that too deep or do they need to be deep in order to star properly?

thanks,

Oh, and happy new year to all. I've not been around much due to suffering with a bad back injury.

Cabochons are quite different from regular faceted gems; they are usually deeper, either because of the dome or it has a belly. It is normal for a star sapphire's depth to be around 60% to 70% of the total width to help focus the star better. The stone you are considering is rather deep. I've purchased stones with a fat belly if the colour and price is right.

Thanks so much, Chrono !
