I am having my setting custom designed by a local jeweler.

Here is the "inspiration" setting Corsica 1005 by Vatche:

And here is what I am thinking (excuse the crappy artwork  ). What do you think?

The thread for the stone is here:

OOOO I love it! It'll look stunning! Will it be in platinum? 18kt? How long will it take for them to do it?

Platinum. He said about 2 weeks if I wait until after the holidays. *biting nails*

I like the split band as it approaches the cathedral. I think the Corsica 1005 looks topheavy and your design should be more balanced.

Just gorgeous!! I love the Vatche Corsica, too! Are you absolutely sure of this jeweler's custom work???

Not "absolutely" sure, but he's been in business for a long time here and has great reviews. He is giving me a reasonable price, taking my trade in diamond for a good price, and I liked the settings I saw in his store that were made by them. I also like the idea of being able to come to him anytime with any problems, if a stone falls out, etc. I guess I'll feel a little better once I see the CAD drafts.

That is great that you can see some of his custom pieces. I'd take a very close look at them, though, before proceeding. This style ring would be perfect for Victor or Steven, and I feel confident about the outcome with them.

It'll go by fast before you know it! Crazy to think 2013 is just around the corner  I also like the idea of going down the street to get a stone replaced. Hope it turns out exactly how you want it to! And can't wait to see pictures!!!

Have you seen pave work from the local jeweler? Looks like a lovely design i would just want to advise you make sure they can do that work before you commission them.

I think your drawing is lovely! and I think the setting will look lovely with your new diamond. Have you decided on the thickness of your shank?

Do you mind sharing the name of the jeweler? I live in the Boston area as well and am contemplating looking for a local jeweler to do some custom work.

Gorgeous! Love the setting design and the stone will look perfect in this setting! You finally found the one! Can't wait to see the completed ring!

It's Fadi Homsy of Homsy Jewelers. They are in the jewelers' building downtown crossing. I saw their pave work, they have quite a bit on display, and it looks lovely. They also have great Yelp reviews and seem knowledgeable and honest. I have struggled back and forth with whether to hire someone online but ultimately decided to go with this guy. Let's hope I don't regret it :)

ETA: I think the thickness will be about 2mm, that's what my bands are now and I like the thickness. We are also reusing my wedding band pave diamonds.

Lol, 'the artwork' is fantastic. Much better than I could do!

I think it looks gorgeous and love the split shank also. Can't wait to see the finished piece!

Thank you for the links, Gypsy.
I looked up "pokey special" and it's lovely, pretty close to what I was thinking except I am pretty particular on when the split shank should start. I want mine to be very very close to the basket, right where it starts coming up. I will be wearing a wedding band with it, and I don't want it to look like a triple band.

But for a large round.

YES! Getting warmer :)
Maybe with the split even more subtle, although I am not sure it's even possible.
Question... I love the look of a shared prong better than channel set, but I heard a shared prong band needs a spacer. I don't want a spacer... but I want the bands to not chew away at each other.

Thanks! It definitely helps working with a local guy sometimes, especially in the long run when you want someone to check your prongs/repair work etc. Do post pics of your lovely ring when you are done!

You terminology is wrong honey. 8)

Shared prong and channel set are not micropave terms. Those are terms and methods of setting for much large melee than you see in micropave.

There are several types of micropave. The two 'main' categories are V-cut varieties and Brightcut varieties.

Brightcut does have a VERY THIN metal border on the outside of the stones. And it is a MUCH safer style of pave.

V-cut does NOT have a the metal border:

If I had diamonds on my shank I would go for brightcut pave.

Either way, you need someone REALLY good at PAVE, not just custom work. And you should have it done in platinum.

Oh boy, I guess I did have it all wrong...

My current wedding band is about 2 mm wide and looks like that brightcut link you posted. I was kind of hoping for a change, but now I am worried it's not going to be durable :((

Even with the most skilled handforged pave specialists here: Victor, Mike R, Steven, Leon.... you are going to be safer with brightcut. You are using a local jeweler, and I don't know their method of fabrication or their skill level. I've had v-cut by a designer featured in museums for her work, she that recognized, who handforged my halo, but was NOT a pave specialist. After 2 years it was losing stones like they were grains out a salt cellar and I wasn't able to wear it and it sat in a box. I do NOT recommend inferior quality pave at all. But especially not v-cut pave.
