Hello I have received some great information about gemstones in another post I have recently written about my hunt for a solitaire gemstone to be worn in a ring everyday. I have narrowed the search to either a sapphire or Aquamarine (I like the green blue colours)

What are your thoughts about these?

The silkiness seems to give it a glow which I like.

The stones are so different, if you love both then it is a matter of taste. The cut of the first one is really cool but the brightness of the other cut is nice.

Aquamarine is likely to get chipped if worn as an everyday wear ring.

Thanks. If the aqua was in a bezel setting would it make a difference to the chipping?

....Perhaps I should be looking at sapphires more closely!!

Only the girdle will be protected; the crown facets remain exposed.

Just in case anyone has questions about where the crown is:

I like the silkiness and glow of the first one. I think Chrono may have already brought up in one of your previous threads about the crown being exposed even if it were set in a bezel, so I would be extremely cautious if you were to set it in an everyday ring. Are you pretty tough on your hands or you pretty cautious?

I prefer the first one, but that's largely because it has a hand shot which looks nice.

Agreed that you want to shift focus to sapphire if you want to wear it every day.

I would want to see a hand shot of the 2nd one.

Just wanted to chime in and say I love the baby blue one! I love aquamarines too, but if I had to choose between that or a sapphire, I chose the sapphire. I scrape my ring all the time. I'm a stay at home mother, but my children aren't the reason why...I hit it against walls, sinks, stove tops, cabinet doors/handles, tables, end tables, fridge, coffee machine, microwave, all doors and bed posts when I'm sleeping and awake...it's safest when we're out of the house as you can see. :D

I'd need more pictures of both. The first one has a bit of green and the hand pic is flooded with light. It probably won't look that sparkly all the time in real life. The second one is seen on an angle, but I prefer the colour. But that is purely my preference, and you said you like green-blue.
Aquas are soft. Mohs scale of 7.5-8. They will chip if banged hard or in a weak spot. You will eventually bang a ring you wear everyday. If you are very careful to take it off for all chores and showering, and if you have a desk job or something similar, you could wear an aqua every day. Just insure it.

Thanks everyone, I am very hard on my rings.....so I have shifted to sapphires!

Any opinions on the following stone would be welcome. I have asked for a hand shot so will post it shortly. I love the colour and plan to have a simple modern bezel setting.

An icy blue with a bit of lavender, eye-clean, good proportions and excellent cutting. Also included is an AGL Prestige Report that shows no indication of heating or any other treatments.

Do you mind starting a new thread on your search for sapphires? This way, you'll get more responses because some might think you've already received assistance and found the right aqua for you.

Thanks chrono great idea I will do :wink2:
