Opinions on this 10.34 carat sapphire!

@ Pandora - I wish I could do that, but then I'd have to shell out 40K at one time! :knockout: These sapphires are from two different vendors. I'm still waiting for a refund one another sapphire that didn't work out as well, so I'll have to do them one at a time.

@ TL you are so right about the extinction!! However, I find extinction (as long as its not too bad) doesn't bother me as much as say a window or loosing color under certain lighting. So, I don't know if the extinction on #1 bother's me that much... But, I do need many, many more photos before making a decision. I have more photos for the first sapphire - and it does appear to have some color banding. What do you think?

Sorry if they're too big!!

I asked about photos of the Madagascar on a lighter background and under different lighting conditions, and they said they'd get that too me in a ASAP, BUT they're sending that gem to Tuscon so it could be a little while. I have my fingers crossed that it won't get bought from under me!

Just know that if a stone is very extinct when its loose, it will be more so when its set. Not really loving the color for that price, which I assume is around $20K from your comments. I really like the second one better, but why oh why does it have to be on a black background!! Madagascar sapphires can be very beautiful and rival Kashmir. The second sapphire really peaks my interest.

The second sapphire shows more potential than the first. The body colour of the first seems a bit dark, which the major extinction doesn't help. Once set, it will darken further. Also, if it is this dark to begin with, it is unlikely to look better under indoor/fluorescent lighting which is prevalent everywhere these days.

When TL talks about extinction, she's talking about losing colour - apologies if you knew that - but you said the one thing you didn't like was to lose colour but extinction didn't bother you so I'm not sure if we're all talking about the same thing!

In both of the new sapphires you've posted, they are dark and as TL said, one has a very high amount of extinction. To achieve the "look" of the ring you've posted from Langs, you need to look for something a little lighter so that when set, it will look darker.

In your latest photos the amount of extinction is quite extreme (for me). I see a lot of black. Extinction never disappears and will be a factor for that stone. In some lights there will be slightly less black areas but it'll always be present. You will lose the gorgeous blue that you're looking for.

I think you are all right about the Ceylon sapphire having too much extinction. I was hoping that when set it wouldn't get worse. But if that's likely to be the case then the Ceylon is a no go! By losing color I meant color shifts in different lighting - like getting greyish in indoor lighting. Or does that have more to do with weak color saturation than lighting? Going greyish doesn't bother me in lighter colored sapphires, but it does for the ones I'm looking at now. Thinking back to the one I saw in Lang's, it had too much extinction as well! At arms length the sapphire looked very black, but close up it was royal blue - with dark areas. I just didn't know what extinction was back when I first saw it! I'm on the pricescope learning curve! :read:

The color I'm looking for now looks something either like this fabulous LM sapphire ring or DianaBanna's amazing Jeff White & Leon from a while back.

Perfection in a sapphire ring! :appl: At least I think so ....

So the Ceylon is out! Thanks for setting me straight on that TL, chrono & LD!! To replace it, I kinda like this one below (even with the blurry photo). I'm trying to get all the stats from the vendor now.
