That one''s AGSL isn''t loading properly for me - i just see the very top, and the rest is black with weird pixelation, so iwasn''t able to see any details on it.

The info in the GCAL looks good, but I wasn''t sure what was up with the AGSL cert - I guess it''s just me?

The report is blocked for me also, mostly black and I can only see the top, maybe BN need to reload it.

I got the report # off the girdle :)

I just put the order through on the phone with Blue Nile!

They were really polite when I asked about the price - that they didn't negotiate their prices, and set them the best that they can, so I went ahead and got it on it's way to me.

I'm so excited!

I reeeeally should have looked at the report based on the # from the GCAL on the girdle awhile ago :D Maybe that weird cert is what turned others off on it, too? I just sort of forgot about it until Ellen posted it again. So, thank you SO much for linking and suggesting that diamond, Ellen!!! And thank you Lorelei and everyone for their help with this process so far.

If all looks good with the stone, I'll get it mounted and post the final result here for sure!

YAY CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!

Very glad to be of help and Miss Ellen knows her diamonds - it should be beautiful!!!

I''m so glad you got this one, it should be an absolutely lovely stone.

The report was messed up for me too, I just assumed you would look at the GCAL report for the info, as I did. I''m sorry I didn''t say anything!

Please come back with pics, I want to hear all about it. And you''re very welcome!

The diamond showed up today. It's amazing! The plot of inclusions shows a cloud and crystal just off center, but with my 10x loupe i didn't see anything at all. It really sparkles, and looks absolutely gorgeous.

I'm going to take it to a jeweler in-town tomorrow, and get it under a microscope, and have it appraised.

Thank you all again!

Okay, now on to the next order of business - the setting!

I went into a local jeweler, who also does custom work, and found a setting in there. It's very pretty, but pricey for being white gold with side stones of only .23 tcw. The setting tapers towards the center stone, and has 4 round diamonds on each side, with a channel of very small beads lining the channel the diamonds sit in. It's definitely very pretty and an option...but it got me thinking...

My girlfriend is a big gardener and loves flowers. I don't want a very busy ring that distracts from the center stone, but I think she might love a flower-themed ring. I found the following examples, both of which are Tiffany rings, that I'm going to pitch to the jeweler to see what they can do. I imagine that they could do something like this without too much difficulty:

The setting will be done in 14k white gold.

This one has 6 stones surrounding the center diamond, so it looks more like a solitaire with "flower petals" rounds. I think this is the one that I'm going to try and get a custom of:

http://www.trocadero.com/stores/acanthus/items/797318/item797318.html

Having all of those pictures definitely helps get the idea of the ring, too!

Also, Tiffany & Co. has this modern version of the flower ring, but the center stone and surrounding circle of diamonds would be replaced with my .79ct diamond that I already have. My girlfriend actually looked at the Tiffany catalog and said "that ring is so pretty!" This one has 8 "flower petal" rounds:

http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=GRP01843&mcat=148204&cid=287466&search_params=s+5-p+4-c+287466-r+101323351-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+

I think the 6 petals would distract less from the center diamond...but with this, i'm worried about what this might end up costing me. I know cost has a lot to do with what I decide on the custom design, but I have absolutely no ballpark range of cost for something like this - I've never done any kind of custom jewelry before, and wouldn't know if I was getting a bad deal or a fair deal when the jeweler quotes me a price.

Based on (let's say) the 1st link, with the 6 rounds around the center stone, what size of the 6 "petal" diamonds do you think would be necessary to achieve the look, based on .79ct center stone? Obviously the side stones don't need to be fantastic quality, just nice enough to look pretty :)

Any guesses as to what something like the above custom setting would cost to have done? I really have no reference for what this might cost.

Conversely, if anyone finds any lovely flower-themed settings online, feel free to share! And thanks

Stone, I'm on my way out the door, so I will look through everything later when I have time. But one thought, I would suggest maybe 18k gold. I have an 18K Ering, and a 14k "fun" ring, that I wear all the time. I notice the 14K's plating wearing off much faster. Just a thought!

D''oh, I meant 18k white gold :P

Thanks so much for your help.

Ok! See ya later.

Stonecutter - I took a look at both of these rings and I like the second one better. However, with that being
said I would suggest that you put the diamond in a cheap standard setting and let her decide (after you propose)
if she would like a "flower" ring or not. If it were me, I would probably like one of these flower rings when I
was younger as a right hand ring but I definitly would not want it as an engagement ring that I planned to
wear for the rest of my life. Its just a very "young" look and IMO will not stand the test of time.
I have to say the one you mentioned at the top of your post sounds more in line with what I am thinking.
I/We (PS) would be happy to make some recommendations for settings if you can give us a price
you want to stay under.

Hmm. You make an excellent point. I was going to go for a more classic look, but figured the flower idea might be cool. The one that they had at the jeweler had an almost antique look to it. It is done by Almer (the jeweler said they were in Canada)...anyone familiar with them?

They priced the setting at $1100, then took 20% off (they said all settings were 20% off) and it was just a bit over $900. I can also get a discount because of where I work, "up to 20% off." This seemed to be really expensive for an 18k white gold ring with .23tcw (8 round diamonds) sidestones. I would''ve thought around f the $1k mark would get me into platinum settings...but maybe the sidestones were good quality or something. It really was a lovely setting, though.

I''m planning on going back with my center stone tonight, getting it under the microscope, and look at the setting again. Maybe I''ll bring my camera and get some pics to post here and solicit opinions :)

Yep, I got the diamond from blue nile :)

I''m thinking of getting it set at a local jewelers incase of any need for resizing, problems, etc in the future. Plus I don''t mind supporting the local shops but saving on tax for the bigger part of purchase and getting more diamond for my money.

I''ll look these over and thanks for your opinions!

This one is really similar to the one that I'm looking at, which has 4 stones on each side, and little dots along the edge of the sides where the sidestones sit. Gave it a more antique-like look.

When I bought the stone, I actually considered this setting, but when I went into the local jeweler and saw that other setting, I liked that one better.

This setting is pretty and fairly classic, so I would think the one you are thinking of making will be too. I agree with tyty, I think this would be a safer bet, than the flower option (nice thought though!). FYI, the little dots of metal are called milgrain, and yes, it does tend to give an antique flavor. Does she like antiques? If so, you are on the right track. If you''re not sure, you might think about leaving the milgrain off, more like the BN ring.

One thing to think about. Have you talked to the jeweler about covering your stone in the unlikely event something happened while setting it? i.e. chips, cracks, etc. Definitely discuss that, most will not. If not, you''ll either need to insure it loose, or have BN set it with one of their settings. If that''s the case, you might do what ty suggested, and just get the most basic setting, and then you two can pick one out together. That seems to work well for a lot of couples, as the guy gets to still surprise the gal, but she gets the setting she likes.

You are doing a great job so far!

p.s. The price the jeweler gave you for the setting is not bad.

You all at this forum are AWSOME!

I love reading about everyone’s purchases and getting the “fine” tuning from the experts can help so much.

My FF is looking at stones but “doesn’t have the patience for PS” and I am like “make sure you wait 24 hours before you purchase anything” I want him to give me the specks get some informed opinions from unbiased experts.

Thanks for the reply, Ellen :) I went to the jeweler last night (worked with 1 of the 3 owners of the place), and he lamented a bit about the savings available to consumers by buying directly through blue nile, said he could''ve matched price and quality, etc - but understood about the tax savings. But, he said I did good and then said, "let''s go look at some settings!"

Oh, and he put the diamond into a cleaner, and let''s just say when it came out and was all clean....
36.gif
It was stunning!

He did mention that they couldn''t guarantee the stone because it was bought elsewhere, only the setting. I didn''t ask directly about insurance on the stone during setting, though. He pretty much made it out like I''m on my own with the diamond because it wasn''t bought through them. The diamond came with a copy of the AGS cert, so should I bring it (the loose diamond and the cert) into my insurance agent''s office and get it insured, in case something happens to it?

I am really happy with the diamond, both because you wonderful and knowledgable folks helped find it for me, and because I got to pour over several choices and know more about what I got.

Although I think she''d love whatever setting I got (we''ve both agreed several times on what we thought of various jewelry items), I''m warming up to the idea of getting a nice, elegant, and simple solitaire setting - and then going with her to pick out a setting :) Do jewelers typically give a credit towards a different setting when you bring the other one in to pick the one she likes? Or am I just kind of tossing money out of the window on the solitaire setting?

Ok, as to insurasnce, you can call your agent, but as far as I know, most companies won''t do this. Chubb''s, and Jewelers Mutal are the ones we have heard of around here. So if it won''t work with your guy, try them. And yes, you''ll definitely need it insured, the jeweler has let you know he won''t cover it, which is fairly normal when you don''t buy the stone from them.

On the setting, I think you and she would really like picking it out together. My hubby proposed many years ago, with no ring at all. He knew I would like to pick mine out (I''m picky
5.gif
), but the proposal was still a great surprise, and we had fun picking out the setting!

I''m not sure if the jeweler would take a trade in on a setting, you can sure ask. But even if he won''t, down the road maybe she can put a colored stone it or something. You can get a very simple setting (and this one you could get in 14K to save) for around 100-200.

And you''re welcome!

Went to the jewelers in town, and looked at their simple solitaire settings, but I took another look at the setting I was considering, and just had "a feeling." I ended up ordering the more expensive setting, with the sidestones, and I'm positive she's going to absolutely love it.
30.gif
I ordered it in 14k white gold (the jeweler really recommended it for durability) and as a 6 prong (the display model I looked at had 4 prongs). It'll take about 10 days to get it from Almer in Canada.

I'm planning on insuring the ring once the stone is set, so I'm thinking I'll get an insurance appraisal from the jeweler once I receive the ring. I think it's pretty standard that they come with an appraisal.

I'm so excited right now!

In a few hours, I'm planning on asking her Father for his blessing, at the Memorial Day cookout he's having - just hope I can pull him aside :) Unfortunately, I think it's going to rain (kinda gloomy clouds rolling in), but maybe things will clear up in time. I also have Father's Day and his birthday immediately before I plan to propose.

Gotta run, but wanted to post an update while my girlfriend ran home to get ready for tonight :D

Thanks for the update stone. It sounds like you're having a lot oif fun!

A note about jeweler insurance appraisals. They are almost always very brief, with just the most basic of specs. So if you should ever need to replace the diamond, the insurance company will only go by what their appraisal says. (They usually over inflate the appraised value also)

For instance, they could write up for the stone:

Carat weight .798

Color F

Clarity VS2

Of Excellent cut. Value at xxxx.xx.

That could be it, and as long as the ins. co. finds you a diamond that has those characteristics, in their minds, they are replacing of "like kind". It won't matter the stone could have horrible angles, depth, table, etc. So, all this to say, I'd really recommend getting an appraisal from an independant person. They will be very thorough, with tons of info, that the insurance company will again have to follow in the event of replacing it. The more info you have, the better!

And good luck with her dad!!

I've got the ring, and some okay pics to put up - but I absolutely cannot figure out how to get the pictures to post. It seems very confusing to me, and usually I'm pretty good about figuring such things out. I have the pictures hosted on another website, but I don't think I can use that here. I "uploaded" 2 pictures, but cannot figure out where they have gone to, so I can't link them in my post in the "Show Me the Ring" forum.

Any help someone can provide? Thanks! :) For everything!!

One is the pic size is too big? There is a 100kb limit. Try and resize and compress to jpg format.
The other is the name of the pic file is too common and someone else is already using that. Try renaming it to some random number with today's date or something like that.

Hope that helps.

Okay.

The pics are definitely smaller than 100kb.

When I try to upload a photo, it says "you attached the following to this post:" and it lists my image name. But, how do people imbed the image actually into their message? I can't figure out the URL to wherever I uploaded the image to on Pricescope

Anyways, the image is attached to this message, so I'm guessing a link will appear. I was hoping to just post the pictures, not links to the pictures.

EDIT: Ohhhh, now i get it!!! hahaha :P
