That's what the sales guy at Kay's told me. My mom wants to reset her ring into an x prong setting, there were Tolkowsky diamonds in such settings at Kay's, I asked about whether the settings were sold separately, and the guy said yeeees, but good luck getting another jeweler to set my moms diamond in it for copyright reasons.

Confused, I said, isn't this just an x prong? Not exactly uncommon. He said the name was on it and other jewelers would feel like they were passing off the outside diamond as a Tolkowsky. I didn't say anything. After all, Cartier and Tiffany don't sell their settings separately, though both are common designs. Is this correct?

Cartier used to, not sure about now.

As you said, it is just an x-prong, you can find somewhere to do it.

Don't buy the setting from Kay's. Almost any jeweler can probably order an x-prong setting. I'd just choose a fine jeweler and ask if they can order an x-prong setting (take a picture) and ask if you buy the setting, will they set her stone.

(Vatche makes one.)
