OVAL DIAMOND QUESTION

Hi everyone,
I'm a real person on here now, YAY!!!! I have a question about my diamond and I hope I am posting in the correct area. It is a 1.50ct oval but my paperwork states "cushion modified brilliant". Confusing!!! I was so excited when I bought the diamond that I didn't pay any attention to the paperwork. I just liked the way it looked and how pretty it was. Since reading and learning so much from everyone here on this forum, I realize how dumb I was when I purchased my stone.

Not all bad, because it is a really pretty stone. But the certificate is what bothers me. It is a EGL USA graded report, which I have since found out, from reading on here, is not the best also. But oh well, I like it and the color is nice and white and pretty clear from what I can tell.

Certificate states: G color, SI1 clarity ( It has absolutely NO yellow at all. )

I bought it loose from a local jeweler and I have had it looked at by a couple of different jewelers who also confirm the color and clarity using a loupe, for whatever that's worth.

Anyway, can anyone help me with the "cushion modified brilliant" issue on my certificate?

Thank you so much,
You guys are awesome, I have learned so much from this wonderful site!!!!!

I have an antique cut oval and the EGL-USA cert says OVAL BRILLIANT. Are you sure what you have is an oval, not a cushion?

Can you post photos of your ring?

BTW Welcome to PS! :appl:

Thanks, I'm so glad not to be a "lurker" anymore.
Yes, it is a PERFECT oval shape. Oval in every sense of the word. Which is why I'm so confused by the certificate.
Sorry, I haven't figured out how to post pics yet.
But....it really is the most OVAL shape EVER. No where near a cushion. Crazy. I'm just wondering if the jeweler gave me the wrong certificate. That's what I'm thinking at this point. He may have and probably thought I would never even know the difference.

I have it in a Brian Gavin "classic truth" rose gold solitaire setting right now. It's on his website, it's the classic truth solitaire in 18K rose gold, the pic with the oval diamond, under the solitaire engagement ring section. Maybe I can get that pic on here. I'll try.

Thanks for your comments.

Here is a pic of my diamond. Sorry so small, just learning....

Time to talk to the jeweler then. Maybe you do have the wrong paperwork!

Do the measurement match up? I'm wondering if it is just an incorrect paperwork or a typo by EGL USA.

Geez, I just went and looked at the little paper that comes with the certificate and it has a "real life" picture of the diamond on the certificate (not just a drawing) and it is a cushion!!! Not an oval!!! Very big difference. The cushion in the pic is square-ish. My stone is totally OVAL. Yeah, I think I need to go talk to the jeweler.

Thanks for your replies

I'm late to the party but let us know how that works out. My GIA cert says Oval Brilliant, so I'd expect yours would too. This is probably a good lesson for everyone to not get so excited (yeah, I'm pointing to myself) that you walk away without checking out all of the paperwork.

Yes, very true. And this was also before I knew ANYTHING about diamonds, literally. I was just an average consumer who was just buying a diamond not caring about paperwork in the first place anyway. At the time, paperwork really didn't matter to me. The only thing that mattered was how the diamond looked.

You know, in the end, does it really matter? I love my diamond regardless of what the papers say. The only thing I worry about is insurance. I haven't gotten it insured yet.

If there's paperwork for your diamond, you should have it. It will help the appraiser when you get an appraisal for insurance purposes. If you ever need to sell the diamond, having the paperwork will help.

And you have the paperwork for someone else's diamond. Best to get it all sorted out now.
