I am just starting to look for a diamond.
I was trying to decide between a round and an oval.
I was looking for some opinions. I was thinking that an oval that had a Length/width ratio that was about small (1.3-1.35) would look be nice. Am I mistaken or does a oval with a small l/w ratio have some disadvanatges?

I saw one

The Preferred is 1.33 ~ 1.66 to 1 ratio
Too long is 1.75 + to 1 ratio (lean)
Too Small is 1.25 ~ 1.10 to 1 ratio (fat)

Example ~ a 1.00 oval should ideally measure out to 7 x 5 mm. If you find a 1.00 that measures out 6x4 mm and still has a nice length to width ratio it does not work. You have to have the ideal measurements for what that weight of diamond is to be at and then apply the length to width ratio. Length to width ratios don’t work on lumpy stones or shallow stones. You must apply both together not just look for a length to width ratio.

Thanks for the info.
I will be looking for an oval ~ 1.7-1.9.
I would rather get a diamond that looks more round than oval.
What is a good ratio for a stone in the 1.8 range

Thanks again
Alex

HI:

I am also an oval fan. Could I make a suggestion that you look at Dave Atlas'' site, since he has this wonderful handy tool where you can input the dimensions of fancy shaped stones you have found elsewhere (e.g. an oval''s L/W) and the corresponding shape will follow. www.gemappraisers.com Toggle the fancy cut selector on the LHS of the front webpage, choose the shape you want and go from there. While there, you might also want to check out the AGS cut guidelines for fancy shapes--I always find it tremendously helpful.

cheers--Sharon
