Oval Pre-purchase Bow tie Confirmation

It is different, that is for sure.
I'm not sure if I personally like it, I think the contrast between the middle part and the ends would drive me batty.
But I'm not the one wearing it so my personal feelings dont matter, yours do.
If it speaks to you and you enjoy it then that's great :}

I know the one you liked the most - that antique Asscher. I like the large facets in both the oval and Asscher. I understand it is not appealing of the hybrid faceting to a lot of people

I love it! I don’t see a bowtie!

It looks amazing @clcat120 ! Well done!

Thank you! I really like it. Full disclosure that I think @Garry H (Cut Nut) is right about it having a little bowtie under more pointed/focused lighting environment. But all diamonds tend to do so -- just different darken patterns. I will post a video later on another 5ct+ oval I saw at an auction house lately (courtesy to @lulu_ma ). You will see large bowtie in that one PLUS darkening tips, which is absent in this oval.

I think there are exceptions like the Elyque oval.

This stone is not the size or color you need. I’m just posting it as an example of excellent light performance in a fancy cut.

This is the sole reason why I now have any interest in oval cuts, thanks to Rhino's awesome Elyque!
Side note: does anyone know why the links to certain websites such as Distinctive Gem become grayed out and "dead" once posted?

I prob just like a non-traditional cut. If I want perfect symmetry and contrast pattern, I might as well at a MRB.

I was an MRB traditionalist...and then I found PS and have such a huge appreciation for all sorts of different diamond shapes now haha
Your new ring looks absolutely stunning! Your oval is primo!

Lovely ring!! Personally the pics make the stone look amazing to me.....

How about this..
Once someone mentions the words "bow tie", steer them away from considering oval diamonds.
This situation seems to have worked out really well.....but there's so many times that a consumer gets the concept of a bow tie in their mind... and at that point, it's a mind clean issue forever after.....

You cannot go wrong with a precise cut MRB, but I just like other shapes more. I never thought I'd get an oval, but fate intervened! lol

don't think I'd ever get a heart shape though. It's just too much.

I am 100% with you. I was SOOOO CONCERNED for a while during my wait for the ring. But I just loved the larger facets in the center, so this is not a traditional bowtie. I think what they don't tell consumers (or we need better physics education in this country) is the fact that all diamond darkens in certain light but in return you see more fire. Also, without the contrasting pattern, a stone will look blahhhhhh...

Cut diamond is like a piece of art -- not all people like Picasso or Dali. In most fancy shapes, I've found that cut can be very much a personal preference. Of cause nobody should buy a very leaky or dull stone.

Excellent discussion!!
Believe it or not, even leakage isn't a negative in all cases.
Dull?? well, to me that's an issue......
But the point about how the term "bowtie" is thrown around definitely creates a mind-clean issue for so many people is clear.
Like you, will love the look of a well-cut Oval Brilliant that has different size facets ( light reflections) in the middle versus the ends.

But make no mistake, there's some really badly cut ovals out there:)

I don’t think this is a terribly cut oval. But it has visible middle and tip darkening areas that I cannot get them to light up no matter how I turn the ring. I don’t found this one appealing despite its a D and VVS 5ct+ stone. And you cannot tell that color it is in warm lighting! It’a not dull but not for me.

I couldn’t assess an oval from a video such as the one you posted. Of course if you saw the diamond firsthand, your impressions count:)

Now a question about the insurance: is Jewelry Mutual the best option? We haven’t bought a house yet, but I also heard the insurance lumped into home insurance has a skinner and more arbitrary payout. The only thing I don’t like abt JM, from my research, is that it pays out as a replacement. They will present you with a few options matching the quality and price, then you just have to take one…

I’d appreciate your thought on this matter! Thank you!

Wowowow!!! That ring is TD4! Congrats!!!

Thank you! I was a bit nervous during that three weeks time while we were waiting for the ring to be remodeled and resize... I never thought I'd get an oval for my e-ring as I was quite set on either an EC or antique cushion... but it turned out to be a lovely purchase! =)
