Pave for daily wear? Has yours stood the test of time?

Hi all,

I posted a lengthy post a few days ago that contained a version of this question (among others), but I'm breaking it out separately here with some more info in hopes that a few more people will chime in.

I own a delicate, milgrain pave halo ring from Leon Mege that I adore, but that has gotten very beat up over time. The ring is off round, the milgrain is dented, stones are popping out. I will have it reset, and am trying to decide if I need to stay away from pave this time around, or perhaps just make some modifications (thicker shank, only one-sided pave instead of three-sided, perhaps a different designer?) to make the ring more durable. I love pave and would like to keep it if possible. However, I do not want to have to have my ring remade every few years (this is the second remake in 10 years).

Background: I am a mom of four and I like to wear my ring every day: driving the kids around, to the grocery store, out and about, what have you. I do NOT and never have worn my ring in high impact situations like gardening, showering, cooking, to the gym, yoga, etc. So, I will use common sense and not abuse the ring, but I need something that I can be comfortable wearing day in and day out in regular non-impact situations.

If you have a pave ring that has withstood regular daily wear, I'd love to hear about it. Vendor suggestions are appreciated. I love Leon Mege but perhaps his rings are just too delicate for my lifestyle?

If you think pave of any type is a no-go for daily wear for a mom of four, I'd like to hear that view too. Thanks!

My pave rings are 8 years old and don't seem beat up at all. I do not have milgrain or pave on the side though (just the top), but the band is an eternity. They are both 2mm wide. I wear them like you do so I think pave can/could hold up a long time.

I have a 3-sided pave ring made by Leon Mege. I bought it knowing that it was not for daily wear. Pressure from gripping a steering wheel or shopping cart can bend a thin band. I know when I do wear my ring for the day I notice how often I hear a ding of metal hitting metal. I hear it when I open the car door, do the dishes, grab a stair railing, etc. 3 sided pave does not have a lot of metal. For me (I am a little clumsy) it made perfect sense to treat my ring with care and not wear it 24/7. That has been confirmed by others who have pave or halo rings.

I have had my ring for 9 years, never lost a stone and it shows no damage other than regular wear of scratched platinum. However, it sits in my jewelry box when I am around the house. I know, a lot of people want to wear their rings all the time, and some do with no issues. But your life might be more hectic or you have a stronger grip.

If you've ever had an injured finger that you were trying to baby, you'd realize how often we wack our hands and fingers during our daily business and not even notice. I have a cut finger and cannot believe how often it makes contact with surfaces and hard things.

Looking at your ring, I think it's the 3-sided pave that is not durable. Sadly, that type of pavé leaves very little metal on a thinner shank.

I don't have a pave ring so I can't chime in based on experience. But - the question of how thin is too thin pops up from time to time. There was a pretty thorough discussion of the question on this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/are-rings-too-thin-these-days.155780/ I'd just add that the thread talks mostly about rings with pave on just a single surface, so the sides of the shank are solid. That's not the case with a delicate three-sided pave ring.

I have two - one sided pave' bands and after four years I sent them back to be "tuned up". I don't wear them to work in the yard, gym, cleaning etc... but I do wear them to work and I travel quite a bit so I'm always grabbing a suit case or my back pack and I think I probably do some damage. I think they replaced a couple chipped diamonds it cost me around $70.00 for both bands.

I have a bypass style halo pave ring that has held up very well over the last 5+ years even with daily wear that is more than I should do (I do wear mine all the time, at home, at work, to the gym--which I know I shouldnt--dishes, etc). Although I will say mine is not as delicate as some and only has pave on the top rather than all 3 sides. Here is a pic of it before I "upgraded" to a larger center stone, but of course that didn't change anything about the pave style, etc. Just to give you an idea of what I mean by "not as delicate"---I've definitely seen much thinner bands/smaller diamonds that might not be quite as durable.

Unfortunately I can't recommend vendors because I got this at a B&M store in California long before I knew PS existed :)

I highly recommend Victor Canera because he is good about refusing to make pave rings that are too thin and are at risk of going out of round, etc. I just think all pave rings have to be treated with TLC. I always take my rings off before cooking when I'd be handling dishes pots and pans, etc. I would not do 3 sided pave, either.

I have a somewhat related question here. If only the band is 3 side pave but the ring is simple platnum, and they are secured together, would that add enough strenght to make the band stand up to daily wear.

My GF (soon to be fiance) has chosen a 3 side pave band as her favorite, I haven't ordered it yet, but the e-ring should be here any day, see below for a couple of pictures that Jamie at Brian Gavin sent me of the actual ring, and a model of the band that she likes, thanks!!

My avatar is 7 years old next month. It's not 3 sided, but kind of two sided with a sharp knife edge. I catch myself doing more things than I should but it is still completely round and I have never lost a stone. Light scratching is all that is present and I have never had it re rhodium plated.

I have a single sided beadset pave ring with millgrain by Victor Canera. I wear it everyday, even to sleep. I don't wear it working out or doing chores in the house. No problems so far.

My Vatche Grace setting has the same type of pave-work is it's been fine. I wear it similarly to the above poster, and I've had the ring sine 2012.

There's not much to solder because the one side that you want to solder onto the e-ring is full of diamonds. Why buy 3 sided when you are going to cover it up in the first place?
