Pear ladies - How many claws??

Hi all,

How many claws do you have / think you should have to secure a pear cut diamond? Sadly my pear made a bid for freedom this morning from my ring. Arghhh!! Thankfully I found it in my daughters car seat, but it potentially was a disaster. I only bought the diamond in June & had the beautiful ring custom made in November, wearing it since mid-December. It has only 3 claws: a v-prong on the front tip & 2 claws on the rounded back end. I had snagged the v-prong & the stone jumped out. The stress of hunting for the stone CSI style brought on my first ever ocular migraine, which brought on a panic attack which resulted in me in tears at the Opticians office thinking I'd detached my retinas or something!! I've never even heard of an ocular migraine??!

Please can you post pics? I need to get a more secure head made for my ring & need suggestions & ideas :)

I wear mine in a bezel. I find v prongs hard to make attractive and too many prongs take away from the yummy shape. I have, though, seen people put prongs on either side of the tip, that might be more secure. But for security and flattering the shape, id go bezel

I own both one with 3 prongs and 5 prongs. The 3 pronged setting has slightly heftier prongs though. It all depends on the size of the stone and the strength of the prongs.

Both settings are made of platinum.

Oh no! So lucky you found it, but so sorry about your migraine :(sad I think the stress alone would have given me an instant migraine.

I'm probably no help as I have a 3-prong (but with a regular claw at the tip, not a V-prong).

My first thought though is that you probably shouldn't be able to snag the prong if it was perfectly made....perhaps this is the problem? Like nielseel I have seen settings that look nice with the prongs either side of the tip. The down-side to that is you leave the tip unprotected.

I wonder if the metal used in the claws makes a difference? Mine is all platinum.

a 5 claws prongs would be secure. your're lucky you didn't lose your pear diamond!

Oh alex i didnt realize this was your post! Thank goodness you didnt lose it. Are you going to have it reset again??

I only have CS pears set, not a diamond, but my CS pear 3 stone has 3 claws / stone - tip + 2 sides.

I'm so glad you found your diamond!! YIKES! Very scary! Take good care of your head today - you need a day or so to recover from that kind of migraine and keep your head more upright than below your heart.

Gee, now you'll just have to go thru and drool AGAIN over the pear thread :wink2: :Up_to_something:

Happy hours ahead of just looking at these beauties!!

What a nightmare. I lost a 2ct round brilliant diamond many years ago that popped out of its setting. It was insured, but I was still sick about it. Thank goodness you found yours. I have 4 prongs and a v-tip on mine.

Thanks everyone. I think I am leaning to 5 claws. I don't want a repeat of today - it needs a more durable setting, especially as this diamond replaces my original broken engagement ring - i'm not having much luck! The 3 claws are quite delicate & I did have awful issues with snagging the v-prong, so the jeweler reset the stone again for me after the new ring was made. I thought it was all sorted. Yes, I can't actually believe I found it. I knew it was OK when I put it on, which was then only followed with getting shoes & coats on for the Nursery run, flicking the dishwasher on & heading to the car, which was when I saw it was gone. So 40 minutes of hand & knee searching found it, thankfully. I was in a bit of a state by then though!

By the way, yes the setting is all platinum.

Neilseel - I'm utterly devastated. I have to send it back to the chap who made it in the first instance to see what he thinks, but my gut feeling ultimately is that I will have to have a new head designed by my local jeweler, who is very clever, very exquisite but.... Very expensive :((

I really think for a solitaire, 4 prongs and the v-tip would be much safer. The ones in a halo have a little more protection, but I'd go with 5 over three anyday. So glad you didn't lose your stone!

Well rats! I remember how hard you had to work to get that original head just perfect with your eternity band. :(

Itll all work out, even if it takes a few more bucks than you hoped. At least you didnt lose it, and you get the excitement of another setting creation ( have to look at the positive, right?)

You're all right - there is a positive. An exciting new head! :))

Here it is :errrr:

I think that must be everyone's major diamond fear... you look down... and your setting is empty!!   PANIC! I am just so relieved you found the stone AND... it can be fixed! With a new look no less! Win /win - its like a 'free' reset ---I mean, you didn't PLAN on this happening, the fates did it for you!!

(if only they'd pay for it, now that would be REALLY sweet! LOL!)

How scary!! I'm glad you found the stone. I think 5 prongs (or even a bezel if that fits your style) would be best...or at the very least just redo the head so it's more secure. I feel like many people have the 3 prongs on pears and have not had issues before. For peace of mind though, I would probably go with 5 given what happened!

Enerchi you make me laugh  It has all been rather stressful & although I did find it, I have NEVER experienced any type of migraine before, which I can only assume was a direct result of the stress & shock. The optician reassured me it was a classic sign, plus my big sister suffers with the eye aurora every 12 months or so & also is adamant it's migraine, but to suddenly get one at almost 39?? Weird!

I started getting migrains at about your age, so it can happen. So glad you found your diamond.

My diamond ring has 5 prongs. Given your experience, I would not go back to three prongs. Five at a minimum.

OH NO!! Thank goodness you found it! Sorry about the migraine.
My pear is in a Gabriel setting with 6 itty bitty prongs.

I love your 6 teeny prongs, Eliasteach I am thinking the more prongs the merrier!

Fly Girl - I have been reassured by one of my close friends who is a massive migraine sufferer, that her's also started around this age (she's in her 50's now) & seem to be stress & hormone triggered. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen too often. Scared the holy cr@p out of me!!
