Pear setting - do you need the 5th prong on the tip?

Question - for my wife’s 3.08 Pear, she’s wondering if she can do without the 5th prong? She doesn’t like the look. I thought it was necessary to prevent a crack or chip but what do I know?

Like this…

Not an expert, but I also have been taught that it protects the tip from chipping and damage... And potentially damaging and scratching other stuff (clothing, phones, leather seats, etc).

Is it "necessary" to hold the stone securely, no I don't believe so.

If you are prong setting and you don't want to chip it, then yes. You don't have to have 5 prongs, but you need something on the point. This is another option, with three prongs. It's a vulnerable part of the stone.

I’d say yes as well. As hard as diamonds are, they chip and rings take a lot of punishment, intended or other wise.
Putting the hand into a drawer could easily, inadvertently, bump the top and … not good….

Yes, you need the prong. I have a pear, and the jeweler highly recommended having the prong on the tip to protect the stone.

I have a pear and have a print on the tip for protection.

Is there maybe a silicone bumper we can put on the tip? She really doesn’t want the tip prong but it’s a 3 carat and it’s sizeable…

Would she like a bezel or a halo?

That would look worse honestly and be not as helpful. I can't imagine a jeweler would actually do it either. Bezel or halo is your other option. Even a metal halo/bezel/frame that was 1 mm or so would do the trick.

The tip needs protection, it is by far the most prone to damage part of the stone, V prong or halo it.

I have a 1ct marquise and chose a setting that protected both prongs even though some settings looked amazing with the exposed tips. The prongs actually elongates the stone nicely.
If she wants to wear the ring daily, I would get a prong. If it's a special occasion ring and set in a halo, you could get away without a prong on the tip but will only take one sharp knock on the tip to crack it.

I personally would protect the tip and get used to the look.

Pears are so shallow out toward their tips. Do yourselves a favor and cover this one with a V-tip. A 3-carat stone is pretty sizable to leave unprotected. If done well, it will help to define the shape of the stone anyway.
