I am considering having someone cut me a pear shaped spinel. My question is A. can a cutter do that, I usually only see ovals cushions or steps, and B would that point of a pear cause a structural danger if set in prongs

Nielseel,
The red pear in my avatar is a pear shaped spinel set in 4 prongs with a chevron for the tip. So the answer is yes and yes, you can find pear spinels but they are uncommon, and they are fine in prongs if you protect the pointy end with a vee style prong.

jkbhere beat me to the punch linking PT's beauty, but I wanted to say that I've seen a few pear spinels in the past several months (so not super common, but out there). Brad at The Gem Trader sold a Luc Yen one recently, and Gene posted one in the last little while as well. As Chrono said, you'd want to protect the tip, but you'd want to do that with any pear, I'd imagine. Will this be for a ring, I take it?

Well a lot of diamond pears can be secured with a prong at the tip, you dont necessarily need a V prong for a diamond tip. They arent my favorite thing, but its good to know they are doable!! Thanks chrono for your first hand experience. As you can probably tell i am looking into more options .... hmm.

Options in terms of spinel, or options in terms of pear?

That was to chrono. Im having issues deciding if I want to do something different from my current (and fairly new) e ring.... ive posted a lot about it over in Rocky Talky... and i know shes seen the discussions

Ah, okay. I occasionally, but rarely, step outside of CS. ;)

Are you looking for pears or spinels? If looking for pear anything, it is tough but doable. If looking specifically for pear spinels, be prepared for a really long wait of months to at least a year, unless any colour will do (but I highly discourage dismissing colour consideration). A small pear of 6x4 can get away with 5 prongs but a larger stone, at least if you care about it not chipping, should have a V tip.

Oh boy is Chrono right! I have been looking for a pear for at least 8 months. ;(

Depending on the color and price range you want, you should check with Jaimeen at Primagems. (be sure and tell him you are a PSer). I got my mahenge pear from him and he had one larger one (mine is 4.42ct) at the last gem show. He had 5 in a similar color and size when I bought mine, but that was several months ago. He goes to Tanzania several times a year so he is always getting new stock. This is a lousy photo of mine, but it gives you an idea. I want to set it similar to this setting.
