I stuck trying to make up my mind on whether I should purchase a diamond pendant from an online dealer that contains 21 high quality diamonds that is a TCW of 1. This means that each diamond is only 0.05 ct. I am thinking that if i wanted to resell the pendent I would likely not find a buyer for the diamonds as they are too small. On the other hand if I use the same amount of money and purchase say a single 0.30 ct diamond pendent with a high quality diamond, this diamond has value mounted our unmounted from the setting. It does not make sense to me to buy something that amounts to no more than high-end costume jewelry.

Please help me? Thanks.

I am confused - if you want to resell, why would you unset the diamonds? Labour is a significant part of the cost and unsetting everything will cause you to lose considerable value, specially for the small ones. Unless, of course, the piece is so out of date that selling it as is is hopeless.

Regardless of that, resale value on any of the two pendant will be very low (certainly below 50% retail). You might even find that the pendant with the small diamonds has better scrap value, because of the increasing price of gold. But buy the pendant you enjoy the most and is priced fairly. Investing in jewelry only makes sense if you are talking about 5 or 6 figure prices or some lucky finds.

Hi Lady_Disdain:

I guess I was just looking at the scrap value of the two pendant and forgot about labor. I am currently looking to buy vs. sell.

I find your comment about investment grade jewelry needs to be in the $10,000 plus category. I guess that below this price point that the jewelry is too easily replicated for it too be an investment. What do you think about my comment about the 21 diamond pendant being nothing more than expensive costume jewelry? (I am not knocking the manufacturer as there is a market for this piece but I think we should call a spade a spade.)
