Oh Alexis, I am so very sorry that this is happening to this beatiful little girl. My thoughts and prayers are with your family in this horrible time. All I can offer is that whatever may happen, you need to believe that there is a reason that this is happening and that God (or whomever you believe in) has a greater plan that we don''t quite understand.

I pray that He grant that little girl the strength to get through and a comforting hand to ease your family''s heart.
 
Have they done a cat scan or an MRI of Katie's chest yet? If she has that pocket on the outside of the lung, it could be something other than what they're thinking (pneumonia) caused it. It also sounds like she's a fighter, despite the sepsis (and probably TSS as well).

Will continue praying for this little girl, her family, and her health care team!
 
Well things are not really any better today...

They have had to put on ANOTHER chest tube on her left side...the pus pocket is gunky bloody and fluid build up and they cannot get it out from the regular tube since it is on out outside of the lung.

She keeps waking up from the sedation and they have tried 3 different meds in the last couple days and she keeps waking up. She will stay out for about 45 minutes and then she gets agitated and wants to move. If she moves she would tear out the Echima tubes and she would bleed to death.

Its been a long day....and it is just hard to take at times. She is just a little girl...

Her scans are not showing much improvement....so its 2 steps forward and one step back...

Thanks for all the prayers...they are very helpful and thoughtful of all of you...
 
Oh no, I;m sorry things aren''t improving, I''ll be thinking of you and his family and I hope things improve quickly.
 
I am terribly sorry to hear about Katie''s illness. It is really shocking for a child to become that seriously ill all of a sudden. I will certainly pray for her. And Alexis, I am also truly sorry for the disppointment you must certainly feel regarding the postponement of an otherwise joyous time for you and your boyfriend.

I am so sorry she is having to got through so much. She is just a little girl, and no child should ever have to experience what she is going through.

You are being very strong, I know it is hard. Two steps forward, one step back is usually what happens to a very sick child needing intensive care. The good thing is that the overall direction is forward. That is hard to remember, but really important.

I will continue keeping Katie in my thoughts.
 
Thanks for all the support and encouragement...

Katie has actually gotten worse over the weekend. They are still having a hard time keeping her sedated and the meds she is on are not for long term use and they want to wean her off of it. Plus they are running out of the meds. Her stomach started to harden and they did an ultrasound. They have discovered that she is now internally bleeding. They tried something last night and we are all hoping that it is going to work, however the doctors have said that if this does not work than there is not much more than they can do for her bleeding.

Frankie and I were up there all Friday and again on sunday afternoon. Things are not going well. I have a really bad feelign in my stomach today and i cannot seem to focus on work right now.

Thank you to all who are my sounding boards right now...

On the engagement part..

Frankie and I went to a DC cafe Friday before the hospital to grab some food...he carried the ring in his pocket the whole time. But there was never the "right moment". It was sweet. At least I know he really wants us to be engaged no matter what. Plus it was kinda funny to watch him be a little nervous. :)

Thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers...keep them coming....I am asking for some miracles...

I hope they are able to keep her sedated, although that can be hard in such a though girl, and I really hope they are able to get the bleeding under control.

Wow...this is just absolutely horrible news. I am sending best wishes for a quick recovery, of course. Poor baby

Just got another update...

katie is not responding to the meds at all...she has started to swell again and her face has swollen so big...they said there is now blood coming out of her nose...which is never good...

Frankie and I will be going up again tonight to see her... if it is her time to go, I just wish she would not be in pain...if she is meant to stay here, then god needs to make her better.

Oh Alexis, that is so heartbreaking that over the weekend her condition has gotten worse.

This is a shocking and upsetting time and it must be very very hard to watch but miracles do happen.

My BIL''s sister had the flu 2 weeks before Christmas. She is 45 and very, very healthy. She went to her doctor who said that it was a viral infection and couldn''t do anything for her. She returned 2 days later where he prescribed her some antibiotics however she took to her bed where she remained until Christmas Eve. My BILs other sisters husband is a GP, he went into see her and she was turning blue so he called an ambulance and she was admitted into hospital where she has remained in intensive care ever since.

Turns out she was so ill she stopped coughing and fluid began to build up in her lungs. Her internal organs started to fail and she wasn''t responding to any medication at all. They were forced to put her in a narcotic coma because she was becoming agitated too like your neice and she was on 100% oxygen and on a respirator and dialysis. Her condition deteriorated so rapidly that the Drs didn''t know what to do or what was wrong with her. Its been a horrendous time for everyone.

2 weeks after Christmas the Drs advised that they couldn''t do anything more for her and that she would pass away in the next 48 hours. So we waited on the phonecall, horrified at what was going on and in disbelief that the flu could turn to bacterial pneumonia so quickly.

Well that was 4 weeks ago. She''s still in intensive care but she is now awake and instead of a respirator they gave her a tracheotomy and she is now able to communicate through touch. Its going to take months and months and we''re still not out the woods yet but we all believed that she would make it even though the Consultants told us themselves that it would take a miracle.

Hang in there and wish and pray as it will make the difference.

I am so sorry that you and your boyfriend''s family is going through this Alexis. It is hard enough to watch a loved one in the hospital, but to watch a little child fight for their life is never easy. I will keep you all in my thoughts. Please take care.

Yesterday......

Well Katie is still not getting better....they have her on an Echmo machine and its takes your blood and filters it through this machine to get out the bacteria and to put oxygen into it to keep her O2 levels up, so they have to give her a blood thinner. Well now that she is bleeding internally they need to stop the Echmo machine and they need to put her on the ocalator whick makes her body jump more and its really bad for her body but they have no other choice.

They are giving her what they call a factor seven and giving her blood platlets so her body can clot, she did well for the first 2 sessions and now they seem to not be working anymore. Its tough. I just cannot believe that they cannot fix her with all the medical advances there are today...

Its been a rough couple of days for everyone.

I just read this post. It is just heartbreaking. I''m sending lots of prayers, dusts, good karma, etc.

I hope they have the best specialists helping your FF''s niece. What a lovely face, and I can''t even imagine that face to be troubled and sick. I hope she''s comforted by her family being around her.
