Pink diamond

Dear all,

I found a 0.9 carat pink diamond being sold at $5,519 USD. It comes with a GIA cert. The rest of the pink diamonds seem to cost so much more on the same site. Is this considered a very good buy?

Coloured diamonds are judged face up, so you'll need a straight down view of the diamond to check for both the colour and cut.

I do think that the price is quite steep- regardless of how the stone faces up.
As you are shopping online you should be able to find some comparable stones to get an idea of pricing.

Problem is prices of pink diamonds in that size run in $10 000 USD and above. Which is why I'm a little more afraid that its a scam rather than the real deal. This is the top view. What do you think?

I apologize, I read too quickly earlier- I added an extra 0 ( I thought is was NINE points, not NINETY)

I also read the "Fancy Pink" part- as opposed to "Faint Pink" which is what GIA called it

Faint pink can be barely noticeable in many diamonds- in rare cases the stone will be pretty obviously pink.
The pics are not informative IMO.The first shot clearly is designed to make the diamond look pink - but as Chrono pointed out, Fancy Colored Diamonds need to be judged face up.
The face up shot does not give a good idea of how the diamond looks either IMO.

As in many ( most) cases, the price may give us an indication of what's being sold
In that, you are correct, if a .90ct diamond faces up noticeably pink, it will most certainly cost more than $5500

Yikes, that face-up shot has been Photoshop'd to within an inch of its life. See how the background - which probably is white paper - is made up of a bunch of tiny colored specks? They've WAY increased the saturation. (That's a sketchy practice from your vendor, incidentally!)

The side view is much more trustworthy. Yes, it's faint (GIA knows what they're doing when they assign those ratings!) but it is, technically, pink. I think "faint" puts it in the K-L-M designation if it were a yellow-tinted diamond, just to give you an idea of how much color might be there. I'm sure there are some clever tricks you can do with the setting to make it look more pink, though! It's a pretty shade and a pretty diamond and in a size range that's (1) visible and yet (2) affordable to mere mortals. If there's a great return policy, I think you should consider it!

I tried to undo their photo manipulation and approximate the background they used in the first photo... it's not great (they manipulated the brightness/contrast and a fair amount of "information" was lost) but maybe helpful. I imagine the diamond is facing someone with a black camera maybe wearing a bright pink shirt?

There's a 45 day return policy from Zaora. Is this online diamond dealer reputable? I've seen some pretty good reviews but one or two really nasty ones which I thought were rather uncalled for. I do quite like a faint or lighter hues and tones of pink as I think the overly dark hues and tones are not as nice even though they are worth more.

Also, on a setting that enhances the diamond's colour, i thought rose gold. If so, do you think its a good buy or I'm better off with a standard white at least a G colour diamond at this price?

Just curious, but would you really considering buying from someone willing to perform such tricks to a photo....

Doing a (quick, kind of cursory) Google search for feedback on PS, I only saw one really negative post about them and that was from someone who only had 1 lifetime post... I'd consider buying with a credit card so you have some buyer protection there, but I think it's a neat stone and worth seeing in person. Especially if it's for you and you know you love the light color! It might make an absolutely beautiful, special, subtle ring. I know nothing about colored diamonds, just opining.

Since you revealed the vendor, you might want to reserve the stone for now, at least, in case someone else is interested in the same thing but less cautious!

I agree with Rockdiamond that the photo manipulation reflects poorly on your vendor, but if their return policy really is good (no hidden restocking fees, and you can return for any reason including you just didn't really like it), it might be worth the risk. (Especially if your method of payment offers some protection. My threshold is a lot higher for wire transfers!)

Yes I am concerned about the vendor who used the tricks in the photograph however, I thought that since it has a return policy, getting to see the diamond in person and then deciding its not good and can be sent back at a minimal fee is fine (I gotta pay shipping since I don't live in US). After all I am dealing with Zaora rather than the vendor correct?

I would not work with any vendor that photoshops. Who knows whether you have to jump through hoops to get your refund back. There is a reason why it is much cheaper than other comparable FCDs so don't ignore the red flag.

How would I be able to tell the cut grade? Would it be shiny? Given something like this, am I better off with just a normal white diamond?

For me, I'd rather go with colourless and get the best cut. It will be difficult to bring out the pink in a Faint.

I own a faint pink diamond eternity band (set in rose gold) and yes, sometimes the pink is hardly noticeable. I purchased it as a set with a matching yellow diamond eternity band. If I were to wear the pink diamond band alone, it would look pink at all. However, when I wear it in between my yellow diamond band, and up against my white diamond e-ring, the pink tones are quite noticeable. Certain circumstances can bring out certain colors, but if you're really wanting a pink diamond to wear alone, then I'd probably stay away from faint pink colors - although, obviously, the more color, the more expensive the stone...
