Hello! I’m kind of new to all of this but I’m looking for a designer of high quality platinum engagement rings that’s not as expensive as Canera or Megé (as much as I would like one)... I have my own diamond so I’ll just be looking for a setting, preferably solitaire. I’ve been looking at Simon G and David Klass, but not sure how they compare, any thoughts on the quality between the two?

Thanks!

David does great work, but he's not really a designer in my eyes. He can help you refine ideas, but if you want help coming up with a design from scratch, I wound't pick David. You need to know how to understand a CAD with David as well. People here can help, but I think there's a difference in a very skilled jeweler like David v a true designer.

Mark Morrell is very skilled in platinum and he has set designs if you will, that you can tailor, so maybe that's worth a look too.

Someone like Caysie Van Bebber is a designer in my eyes.

In the long run, the difference in price for the best versus nearly the best is not that much when you consider a lifetime of wear. Much depends on what style you are interested in. If it's just a solitaire, just look at the designs each has done. If you are not going for handforged, I do think Caysie van Bebber has the most fluid and beautiful solitaire designs.

Agree with this!

Mark Morrell has a beautiful, clearly-identifiable aesthetic. IMO noone does molten, flowing metal better than he does.

Caysie's design sense errs strongly vintage. I find her aesthetic irresistible and her workmanship is impeccable.

Diamonds by Lauren has a number of benches. His best bench made my graduated five-stone trellis and it was perfect in both design and finish.

Just an FYI - many jewellers are currently unable to fabricate due to shelther-in-place and stay-at-home mandates. They'll be able to tell you specifics of their situations if you reach out ::)

Thank you all for your responses, after hours of searching and price quotes I went a complete opposite direction and decided to go with Victor Canera. His prices really aren’t all that bad for what I want and what you get, it sounds like his work is very top notch
