Platinum regrets anyone?

I absolutely had to have platinum as the metal used in my e-ring and wedding band. Why? Well, I got it stuck in my head that it was the superior metal..yada, yada. I really wish we had used 18K white gold...I wear my rings, and although I don''t think I am too rough on them they have little "dings" or "divots" on the undersides. It is my understanding that 18K WG is stronger? Oh, and saving $1,500-$2K would have been nice. Does anyone else out there feel a little disillusioned about Platinum? These are my first platinum pieces, now I know better.
 
Not necessary WG is harder than Pt, depends on the respective alloy used.

Simply send it to be polish, much less metal will be lost in the process than if it were a WG.
 
I've been so thrilled with plat, I've had all my jewelry made in the metal.

I also like the heavier metal.

White gold is very pretty and I love the super shiny look. But my skin chemistry is such that white gold turns yellow on me. And I also like to live worry free and dunk my pieces in ammonia cleaning solution and not worry about it. Also, I swim in the pool a lot and I would hate to have to take my necklaces/earrings/rings off all the time. You're not supposed to wear white gold in chlorinated pools. So that's why I love plat for everything - it's just a good metal to "live" in... worry free.

Secretly, I think white gold is prettier.

But platinum is definitely more worry free for me so that's why I love it.

Splendid! Having it "polished" will smooth out these dings...Wonderful news:) I will consult my jeweler tomorrow.
 
no offense to WG lovers but platinum is without peer. its heavier and has a depth to the patina that WG simply doesnt have
 
Yes and no. I like how heavy platinum is and get the feeling it''ll last through generations, even of extended wear. I also like how shiny white gold is. But as white gold gives me a rash, platinum it is.

I do wear my pieces to our pool as well, and then they take a swim in my jewelry cleaner...so I guess I can''t have it both ways can I? I like the look, I am just concerned about the durability factor?
 
Well, both are very durable! You won't have to worry.

An added bonus that platinum has over white gold is that gold loses material - tiny specks of gold are being shed over time. That's why people shouldn't sleep with their jewelry on - the bedsheets can be very abrasive over time and wear away prongs and etc. Of course the rate at which this happens is very slow, but it happens! I think I just read a thread in which Wink said he found $400 worth of gold powder from his ultrasonic cleaner over a long period of time. Of course, he's one of our respected vendors so the volume of pieces he's cleaning is more than what you and I would send through the US!

Platinum, however, only displaces - it will move/smush but you won't *lose* any mass. Kind of a fun fact. LOL.

LOL. I was just surfing the forum for info on platinum allergies! I''ve never had platinum until about a month ago when I bought an antique diamond and platinum ring. It was to be my RHR but my finger developed a bad rash and my whole finger just ached! The ring was the perfect size, and the rash went from the first bend in the finger where it meets the hand right up to first knuckle (the ring is only 4mm wide so it was much wider then the ring). I talked to my FIL who is a doctor and he said although it is RARE beyond RARE it is possible. Who knew? When I get a chance I''m going to take it down to Wink to see what he can do with it as far as resetting in white gold (since I''ve never had an issue there). So, no platinum for me!

P.S. Hubby loves this as WG is much less expensive

WOW. Are you positive it''s platinum? Did you have it checked to make sure?
 
I have a bunch of rings in platinum and wg. I have arthritis in my left hand so I cannot tolerate wearing platinum for long periods of time on that hand. That is the only negative to platinum for me. Otherwise the platinum rings I wear on my right hand are absolutely gorgeous even decades later. I am considering looking at palladium though for future rings on my left hand. I am not sure how well that will work, but I want to give it a try since I do love platinum so much.

We know that is is Plat. (I''ve had it tested three times

) BUT we don''t know what it is mixed with. That''s the issue. Whatever is mixed with the head of it is causing problems where as the shank which was replaced at one point is not.
 
Maybe minority, but I''m a platinum fan [adore it''s weight] I keep mine polished though, no patina for me.
 
So weird.. and lucky in a sense because gold is cheaper. wish I had your allergy instead of mine.

I have two tension-set diamonds, one setting is platinum and the other titanium.

I love the heft and solid feel of the platinum and am thinking of getting the stone that's in titanium reset in platinum.
 
I only wanted my setting made of platinum... I don''t like the idea of white gold being a plated metal. I mean, that really is what it is. I like the purity of platinum, the fact that it is what it is and you never have to replate it, and that it''s tougher than white gold. I also like the fact that you don''t lose much actual metal when it dings and scratches... the metal merely gets moved around and is easily polished to a smooth finish. Platinum just seems more worry-free to me, so I don''t regret it although I''ve only had my ring a few weeks.
 
Having had both 18kWG and plat...

I love the colour of unplated 18k white gold against my skin. That said, even though I baby my ring, I didn''t like the fact that every scratch was a little bit of gold lost. My reset is plat., and in the month I''ve had it it''s acquired more divots and scratches than my wg had in six, but I''m a sucker for the "forever setting" line.

My life would be so much simpler if I could turn off the worry trait

OCD girl here! You should see my house..with that said, I don''t think I was informed on all the wonders of Platinum and that it could be polished to a smooth finish easily...Just knowing I have that option makes me happy.
 
No platinum regrets! I''m now trying to figure out how to afford future projects in platinum. I feel that platinum is so much more everyday-wearable than WG. I baby my WG rings, and even so, I have to get them replated all the time because my body chemistry turns them yellow pretty quickly. I love that my platinum rings don''t need maintenance. So far, I haven''t polished them, and they still look gorgeous to me!
 
No platinum regrets here either. My white gold curved wedding band went yellow really quickly so I''ve just got a knife edged tiffany band whilst I look out for a curved platinum band to replace the 18kt white gold band.

I love platinum and definitely don''t regret getting it. I wish I could afford to have all my jewelry be platinum! I don''t know how your body reacts to white gold, but I know if I had a white gold wedding set that I would be constantly getting it replated. I bought my husband a white gold ring and ended up replacing it with a platinum one because his turned yellow pretty quickly.
 
Love the feel and look of my platinum...no regrets.
 
No platinum regrets here, either. LOVE the look and the ''heft.'' I prefer platinum for my major pieces, and if funds don''t allow, palladium.
 
I like platinum, and white gold both. I have no real preference. So, I tend to get more white gold jewelry since it''s cheaper. I find they both hold up very well over the years, and when I look at antique jewelry, both show pretty much equal wear to engraving and millgrain over 100 years time.

If I were wearing a plain band, I''d probably go white gold. Platinum patina looks better on jewelry that has decoration like filigree or millgrain, IMO (which, of course, is very much a personal preference). Also plat seems to scratch more quickly, which yeah, it''s repairable, but I prefer less maintenance.

However, rhodium finish lasts for a looooong time with my skin chemistry- if it wore off fast I''d be irritated too.
 
I prefer platinum if it is alloyed with ruthenium. Some platinum is softer and less durable due to the alloy. Try to stick with the platinum with ruthenium in the future...it is what Leon Mege and Tiffany''s usually use.

Each has it''s own merits. All in all if we buy something because we convince ourselves that it is the status quo, our rational minds return to scold us. So lesson learned- buy it because you love it.

You are so right, white gold has always held up beautifully for me. There was no reason for me to go with Platinum personally except to say that I have platinum rings...There are worse things, it is beautiful and I love the look:) I''ll just have it polished when the "dings" bother me.

Thanks ladies...My love for Platinum has come full circle.
