Hi All,

Can you wear platinum & white gold rings next to each other?

My engagement ring is platinum and I am looking at eternity bands as my wedding band. Do I have to get platinum or can it be white gold?

I could have sworn that I read it here somewhere but I have searched the threads and couldn’t find anything.
Have I made it all up in my head ?

yes, you can wear white gold next to your platinum, however, you will have to replate your white gold every so often though to keep it shiny white gold, which may or may not bother you.

I''m pretty sure that I read on PS not to mix them. That the gold would wear down quicker. Maybe a jeweler could chime in on this question.

It is only a problem if something sticks out and scratches the other ring. I''ve said this before, but my mother has worn a wg anniversary ring for many years with her platinum rings and there is no visible wear at all. I think it is fine as long as smooth surfaces are against each other.

I agree. The only problem I envisage is the difference in color between W/G and platinum. Platinum will look gray after a while?

I am looking at the uternity so I think it should be smooth enough. I think I might just get a small platinum spacer to wear in between. That way the spacer would get the damage, if any, and not my engagement ring.

Thank you all for your responses.

I''ve been wearing a platinum wedding band next to my white gold engagement ring for 5 years now.

I worried about it a lot at first - I was planning to get a white gold wedding band, but after lots of shopping the only band I found that I liked was a Scott Kay and only available in platinum at the time. I''ve had no problems so far - my two bands are quite smooth on the sides, and fit together without any rubbing. I haven''t noticed any additional wear on the gold so far.

There is a slight color difference. My white gold doesn''t normally get very yellow (I''ve only had it rhodium plated once in 6 1/2 years of daily wear), but it is a different tone from the platinum. I don''t notice it much because there''s not much metal visible on the tops of my rings, but I can see it when I look at my palm. I don''t think I would mix the metals if I had a plain solitaire and wedding band - just my personal preference.

I kept thinking I would switch my engagement setting to platinum at some point to match, but then metal prices went way up and it hasn''t seemed worth it. I just upgraded last summer, but kept the same setting, so it looks like I''m staying with white gold for the forseeable future. That''s fine with me now since I haven''t had any problems!

If you intend to wear the wedding ring next to the engagement ring most all the time, why not have someone tack solder them at the bottom so that they do not rub or wear eachother away, but serv to protect one another from wear instead? A jeweler can always unsolder them if repairs or sizing are needed and you can roll the eternity to a less worn position after a few years to even out any outer surface wear. You can even flip the outer surface to the inside and make the other surface take up some wear, too.
