Platium: It''s dark and I don''t like it!
I have recently had a custom ring created. I was told that it would be made out of white gold. However... once the ring was made for me, I noticed immediately that the whiteness of the metal was more like gun-metal gray. When washing my hands, the metal actually looks dirty. Yuk!

When I asked the jeweler about it, he said that because of the design, white gold would have yellowed in places that couldn''t be polished and I would be rodium plating it for the life of the ring. So THEY made the decision to go with Platium without conferring with me. Platium... not platinum. Now, I have a ring design that I like with a metal that I don''t. Buyers, beware!

There is no metal by that name.

Terry- based on what you write, I''d be a little concerned.
Platinum ( likely a spelling error) is far more costly that white gold....did they change the price?

Also- white gold can look very nice- in pretty much any setting- even intricate ones- so them telling you they could not get the gold to be white, or that it would yellow and polishing would help sounds contrary to actual experience....

Did you get some sort of a money back, or satisfaction guarantee?

I think you misheard and they made the ring from palladium. It''s a darker gray and I agree, it''s not my favorite color. The good news is that you can get it rhodium plated if you''d like which will make it a lighter white and when it wears off it''ll be less obvious.

It''s a common misspelling of platinum, oddly enough. One woman I know in the antique jewelry business who sells a LOT of jewelry always writes platinum as "PLATIUM"- I''ve seen her do it dozens upon dozens of times, and like as not I often go back and white it out and rewrite it. It drives me up the wall! It''s just one of those odd things that gets around I guess. Like "lightening" instead of "lightning" or what have you. That''s my guess anyway.
