I have an old ring bought from Kay. That was before I got educated at pricescope. Kay had a 10 year interested trade in policy at that time, that will give me $2800 discount if I buy a diamond ring (not anything else) over $5600.
I know Kay or any other mall jewelers are not a good place for true diamond lovers. However, I thought with my education here, I may be able to negotiate a near reasonable deal, and finally cut $2800 off. However, I was frustrated to find Kay carries only IGI certificate, which has no cut grade like GIA''s. Here you can see the sample report from IGI:
http://www.igiworldwide.com/en/rep_dia_diamond.htm
So my questions are:
1. Is there any way to grade IGI''s cut data to make something comparible to GIA''s scale?
2. Would you suggest me to shop somewhere else and throw away the $2800 discount or to struggle with Kay in pushing them to provide better data?
I don''t think I am able to examine the diamond by myself. All I learned here is just to be able to debate over numbers on paper. The old one is an uncertified diamond I paid $1800 at Kay 9 yrs ago. I don''t think I can sell it anywhere. It will worth the most to throw it back to Kay.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Well here is what I see with this situation. You paid $1800 year ago and you would have to purchase something now over $5600. That is alot of money for something that probably isn''t worth what you are paying for it even with the trade in. I would maybe have the old one set in a little pendant later on and just get a new ring. You can get a nice ring for less then you were going to spend in Kays with nice stats on it. What size are you looking at now, maybe we could tell you what you can find for about the same money. That might give you some options. I have had bad experience at Kays but the 90 day return policy is nice! Hope that helps!

Well it seems slightly more complicated than that to me at least. Kay''s premier diamond line (Leo collection) currently is advertizing $6500 for a 1 caret ring. Assuming you throw away the setting this would put a 1 caret diamond at $3700. Looking at say GoG an H/SI1 with fair polish/symetry is going for $4800. So this $3700 could be interesting if there were anyway to correlate performance data using the IGI and presumably Brilliancescope data that Kay would provide.

However I would have to assume that just the fact that they are advertizing a fixed price for those 1 caret rings on thier webpage suggests that there won''t be any ''high end'' 1 caret diamonds even if you were to have good data on all of thier stones.

Just to clarify: For a $5600 ring, I will pay $2800 and give them the ring.

Leo is an unconventional cut with extra facets. From all I learned here I was told to stay on the conventional cut so to make it comparable. The calculation will be easier if Kay would provide more detailed data. But the onsite so called jeweler is either undereducated or assumes I am undereducated. You know those mall jewelers. He tried to tell me the cut grade is the same as polishing and symmetry. However, the sample IGI cert does not provide a cut grade. Should I be stubborn and insist they provide more data?

I was having similar questions before I found pricescope!

I have the half carat ideal cut solitaire from Kay. It does have an IGI cert. Luckily, my fiance chose a stone that scores 1.2 on the HCA and I can see (imperfect) arrows in good lighting. Even though the listed stats probably aren't 100% accurate, it's still a decent stone.

I originally thought that when the time came, I would trade in my current ring for the one carat ideal solitaire. However, the cost on that is nearly 9000! After trading in my ring, we would still have to pay over 6000 to make up the difference. And, for 6k, I can get a one carat ACA from Whiteflash (for example) AND keep my original diamond.

I don't know if they can give you better data without sending out the stone for certification (on your dollar).

Best of luck!

The above is the ring my fiancee was interested in. I was thinking of put a bigger and better center stone on it. One advantage of the mall stores is the hand on experience. This may not matter too much for the stone, but the ring design is subtle and can not be evaluated by just measurement and numbers. I send the photo to Bluenile, but they don''t order rings for customers, just from what they carry. Do you think I can send this to whiteflash or other stores recommended here and still make saving close to $2800?

By the way, what are the jewelers recommended on this site these days? Is it still GOG and WF?
