My friend has this ring that needs to get sized (from a 7 to a 6). It's a plain platinum band from T&co. She doesn't live near a T&co and I'm not sure the drive out there is worth it if it's a simple job. Is it a simple job??? I'll make her drive out there if it's not and of course I'll accompany her to look at the pretty rocks =).

Will the size change require the ring to be cut and then soldered back together?

What's the difference between welding and soldering?

Do you think this is an easy job for most jewelers? How much will it cost? She'll call T&co on monday to get an idea of their pricing.

I read some of the posts about sizing and someone's dvatche ring was ruined.

Her dilemma will probably be my dilemma soon but I will probably need to size up...as I am preggers and my fingers are swelling.

thanks guys.

From what I remember reading on this site, I think T&Co only does sizing at particular locations.

I think they''ll take the band and ship it out anyway....maybe she should contact T&Co and ask if she can ship it to them herself, to save the travel?

As for the rest of the post, I''m sorry, definitely no expert here!

A plain platinum band can be stretched a small amount, or cut and a section added, then welded back together.
Using solder will leave a mark.
A credible jeweller should be able to perform this service.

If she got it from T&Co, have her contact them before doing anything. People pay a pretty big premium to get the Tiffany brand associated with their piece and there is a lot to be said to not letting anyone else mess with it. If she bought it on the secondary market it matters less but it's still worth the trouble to seek out a jeweler who knows what they're doing with platinum.

If she lives in the US, it's fairly easy to ship it to them by USPS registered mail for work to be done. It won't be cheap. Tiffany doesn't do cheap.

Yes, it requires the ring to be cut and reattached and no, it's not as easy as it sounds. Nothing with platinum is as easy as it sounds.
