Hi,

I have a question with regards to engagement ring.

Will J colour diamond round cut ideal with medium flourecence look yellow to my partner in platinum setting? Will it be noticibly yellow esp if she is wearing every day and sees side on view etc?

I have budget to go up a grade colour to I (and could take an I with no flour

Which diamond would you recommend. Would I see a significant improvement in colour from J to I meaning my partner would not be able to notice yellow in diamond? Is J sufficient to notice no yellow? Don’t want her to feel her diamond is inferior if she compares with friends. It will be viewed most in office setting or home lighting.

As I say I can go to I colour and increase my budget by £650 but don’t want to do this unless there is going to be real improvement.

I also notice that jewellers in UK never really stock a J so can’t see it in person (and shops closed due to lockdown).

Thanks

There is variability in the tintedness of J and lower colors. The video of your J looks significantly more tainted than video of the I. It is reasonable to assume your fiancé could see it. If tint is a concern then I would consider the I. The I angles are also a little more complimentary than the J. Since you have chosen SI1 clarity have you ensured these stones are eye clean?

Thanks for your reply. Yes both confirmed eye clean and no bgm. Thanks for advice. I didn’t know how much of a jump up between I and J and if I would be spending £650 more for no tangible improvement, I.e. both diamonds still appearing yellow to naked eye

You went with the J since it’s no longer available?

Color aside, the angles on the I work better. That 35.5 ca on the J is too high imo.

I would ask her what she likes. Personally i am a colored stone gal, but, if I were to ask my DH for a diamond ring ever, it would be an antique in the range of Q-Z with an old cut. I do not like bright white diamonds, but my mom for example has a D, IF. And my brother in law hates diamonds with any yellow so my sister has a bright white as well. If my DH, had bought that though, thinking I liked that—I would have asked for something else. Thankfully he did ask so we went with a CS ring but it is highly subjective. I would just ask.

She will most likely see a tint in the J especially in certain lighting conditions. I would go with the "I" especially if you can afford it. Plus
the "I" is a better cut.

(Full discloser - I own 2 Js. I see tint in the 1.14 but dont in the .46 because I think its just too small to see anything but brightness from the light
return. Both are Super Ideal stones)

Thanks for all the help everyone was too late on the I it’s away but think I should keep searching for an I

I would choose an I.

Do you think the I will look white to untrained eye where as J won’t

That is not an answer that any of us can give you. To some it will be obvious, to others it will be inconsequential and to others it may be that the J is preferred over the I.

Your vision will be your vision, and others cannot decide for you what your vision is. How well a diamond is cut will also affect how it is perceived, especially face up.

You may want to spend some time at local jewelers looking at diamonds in the size range you are thinking of getting and see how they look to you. Just know that if they look great to you, it still doe not equate to how it will look to the love of your life.

If possible, get her involved in the discovery visits to local jewelers.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!

It depends on the wearer of the ring. What she wants, how color-sensitive AND color-tolerant she is. I am color sensitive from I down but I am also somewhat color-tolerant. Cut of the diamond plays a great role in "masking" the color. Some people cannot stand J color, some love it, some are willing to tolerate it in order to get a bigger stone. Ultimately, it will be up to her.

And dont forget that jeweler's lights can make almost any stone look good. See if they will let you look at it outside or near a window where
you are not as exposed to the jeweler's lights.

It's all in the eye of the wearer. I personally have had a J and a K with flour and I did not see tint compared to others
