Hi all,

i have now narrowed it down to 2 diamonds for my Harry Winston inspired micro pavé ring.

the first one is a GOG 1.5 Ct AVC: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9875/

the other one is a 1.67 Ct 8 facet cushion brilliant. GIA, ASET and picture attached.

Please come with your input on these. I like both very much but cant really decide so your help is super appreciated :)gia_9.jpgaset1_1.jpg1_104.jpg

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

price is simliar for both. 16k for the modern cushin and 17k for the AVC

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

Modern!!!

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

hehe. because of personal preference or why is this your pic?

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

I would definitely go for the AVC. They have ideal light performance and are gorgeous! Look at that ASET! But I guess it depends on what kind of look you want - modern or antique. Also, the modern one only has "good" for symmetry and probably won't be as bright as the AVC, judging by the ASET.

Good luck deciding!

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

Thanks for your reply!

The AVC is really nice. My only concern with that one is the culet which is pretty big. Is it something you think will look "too" big once is in the setting?

The modern cushion obviously has a worse aset. This stone has external characteristics that on the GIA is called "Natural". I have not seen this before so wonder if it is a big deal or not.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

I would say that if you don't like the look of the large culet you shouldn't get an AVC. I'm not an expert, so I can't chime in on how the modern cushion you've posted looks, but I do know that if the culet of the AVC bothers you now, it probably will continue to bother you.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

AVC!

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

AVC. In real life you will not notice the culet.

Yes, I like what Jon calls "crushed ice" in a cushion. He also calls it garbage. But to me and others, it's beautiful. And I wouldn't pay more for an older looking stone, so I just don't understand the whole AVC thing. I know it's got everyone on here going crazy, but I don't like it. It reflects light just like an emerald or asscher.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

not a fan of the dark edgings. this doesn't seem to be the best cut diamond you can get from GOG.

Two very different looks where one is modern (but not crushed ice) and the other is chunky antique. If you don't like the culet, then do not get the AVC because this is one of the main characteristics of an antique design. It isn't a gaping hole but I know that some people might be bothered by it.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

personally I love the AVC but some like modern cushion brilliants and both are lovely, it is a matter of personal preference. You can't go wrong with either stone.

i would have them do a video of the two stones to help you decide what you like.

The "modern" stone technically is not "crushed ice" but is far more appealing to me than the chunky. Crushed ice is definitely more faceted than this one, but I still prefer this "modern" as opposed to the antique.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

Can you describe your gf's style? Maybe we can get a better feel if she would appreciate the antique-look or would prefer the modern cushion. I don't think the modern would be a crushed ice pattern, and they have very similar widths. The culet won't be as noticeable in real life. Here's a video of the one you are considering (it's on the left) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9REoiZSL7fY

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

I have an AVC (1.43ct) and I can tell you the culet is not a big gaping hole at the bottom of the stone. The pics online are greatly magnified, making it seem even bigger and more pronounced. I love my AVC, and I really don't think you can go wrong with that beauty!

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

I think the only way for you to get a feel for the performance between the two stones and to see what you like is to get Jon to do a side by side video.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

Thanks for all your replies!

A side by side video would be amazing. but unfortunately the modern cut is from ERD and the AVC is obviously from GOG.

I dont mind the culet in general on the AVC's, its just that this one looks a bit bigger than most other ones which concerns me a bit. But i think, as most of you say, that it wont be as noticeable irl.

me and my lady have looked at lots of diamonds. she doesnt like the crushed ice look (and neither do i) which is why i'm looking at this modern cut (non-modified brilliant). she has seen charmypoo's ring that has a similar diamond in it and likes that one alot. Problem is that this type apparently is super rare so ERD could only find this one stone with this particular cut.

the lady likes the AVC's as well (and so do i :)). i like the beter performance of the aset etc (how visible will this be in real life?)

bottom line is.. if i could find this 8 facet modern cut with extraordinary light performance, scintilation etc then i would go for it. i just feel that this stone is not quite there... with Symmetry-good, questionable aset?, large table etc...

sorry to come across so undecisive...its just that it is my first time buying a diamond and i want to make sure i pick something she will love and be happy with for the rest of her life.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

I wonder if Jon would have something akin to the ERD Cushion that he could use in a video for comparison purposes ?

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

If I remember correctly, Charmy has both a Modern & an AVC Cushion, it would be interesting to see what she thinks.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

AVC!

James allen has started carrying some amazing antique cut cushions. Their videos on their stones are great. You can pick 3 stones and they will take an ASET of them so you can judge the performance better.

For the price and large size I recommend this 2c J VS2 price $10,740 7mm x 8 mm

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/2.00-carat-J-color-VS2-clarity-sku-178711

J's are still in the colorless range and face up nice and white. I suggest you read this thread (page 3 for her story) on this 5c J color VS2 honker from leon mege. It is phenomenal and may inspire you to go with a J color, they are the best kept secret for getting a nice white stone for a better prize and size.

Thouarella states:
"So at the end of the day and after months of searching we decided to go ahead with Leon''s stone and I just love it. The J doesn''t bother me at all and mostly it looks icy white and I only notice a tiny bit of warmth very occasionally from certain angles (my e-ring is an E and there is a very slight difference but really not very much). "

Here are some others I found that might interest you as well. Most are under your budget:

I also like this 1.74 F VS2 It has a really nice high crown that is just awesome.

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/1.74-carat-F-color-VS2-clarity-sku-184946

And this 1.5 H vvs...check out that awesome Kozibe effect (reflection of the culet in the stone as it turns...yum!) under $12k

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/1.51-carat-H-color-VVS1-clarity-sku-191545

Hope this helps in your search.

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

Thread on Kozibe effect:

Kozibe effect shows cut that produces fire

"The reflections of the culet occur when crown and
pavilion facets are both steep. The same proportions
produce fire....Pairs of culet reflections on crown facets form when
light bounces off the center of the pavilion into the crown facets. The
reflection of the culet appears dark because light does not reflect back
from it but passes through."

Interesting that GOG's newly cut AVR's (and some of his AVC's) are showing the Kozibe effect.

The 2c J and the 1.51c H are both cushion brilliants.

This just caught my attention because you're bringing up a good question that I haven't seen posed here in a while (at least on the RT forum).

When I first began my search for a new stone, I too was wondering about the AVC "craze" on PS. I've assumed (I know, bad thing to do) that it was because with an AVC we can get an "old" cut (since many folks like that look) with a light return that's graded IDEAL (AGS 0) by AGS. But you bring up an interesting point about the light return of ECs and Asschers.

I've come to love the look and performance of Asschers. I think they're stunning. But I'd never thought to compare them side by side w/ an "old-cut" cushion. Do you think that they return light on par with the AVCs or is it more a case of them returning light in a different WAY than the AVCs? You've now got me wondering if there are ECs or Asschers (or any other shape other than round and princess) that would be graded by AGS as Ideal? If not, why not?

I don't want to take this thread completely off-track, but I'm really interested in your thoughts on this. I've done studies of what is termed "group think" and sometimes I wonder if we (PSers) get carried away in one direction or another by that "wave" ....

Re: Please help me choose between these 2 cushions! pictures

Hey tom123, I noticed you posted on my thread, so I was wondering if you had decided between these two? It seems that you are talking to all the right people already!!

I love modern cushions, so I vote for that one. Can you get it sent to you with a return policy? The best way to know for sure is to see it in person and not necessarily get caught up on the technicals of it (just my two cents).
