Hello Everyone,

First off, I would like to say thank you for this forum. I don't know what I, or other people like me who are diamond/gemstone beginners, would do when attempting to design our own rings, so thank you very much. I am hoping to propose to my girlfriend soon, although timing depends on creating the perfect ring for her. I luckily stumbled across this great forum in my novice research attempts, and was really hoping that you guys could point me in the right direction with options for colored stones.

My girlfriend loves colored diamonds (preferably pink) as well as natural, untreated sapphires and rubies. My budget is up to $3,000 on the stone- I could go slightly over for an amazing stone, but it would be awesome if I could stay under. I've looked at leibish, which I have read a lot about on this site, but I think I am having difficulty because I do not know how to choose a stone! My gf is willing to look at stones from around 0.2 cts and up (we plan to create a custom setting with other stones perhaps surrounding the main colored stone). Would y'all please be able to give suggestions as to stones that might work in my budget?

Thank you again, any options or advice you might be able to provide is very much appreciated.

What shape should we be focusing on?

Wow, thank you so much for the reply and the stone suggestions! Those rubies are gorgeous, but I really like that pink diamond. I just spoke to my gf and she mentioned that she would actually prefer a fancy colored diamond- how does that company that you linked to compare to leibish? Regarding shapes, no real preference- I think she likes more unique cuts, but will be more swayed by color (and perhaps size) than anything else. Thank you again, I'll be showing these to my gf tonight!

I haven't bought from reddiam, but they are legit (just like Liebish and DBL). The stone is GIA and the color looks like a nice salmony pink in a nice shape and facet pattern. If it's something she likes in the one picture, definitely ask for more or even a video. The three major FCD vendors (Liebish, DBL and Reddiam (IMO)) will gladly take more pictures for you and answer your questions.

I would just want to make sure that you know how small a .2 ct diamond would be - pretty small...

Hopefully, Kenny will drop by at some point and give you some pointers on finding just the right colored diamond.

I like the link 8316 = 0.2 ct radiant because the colour comes through well and is evenly distributed, and also faces up well. That said, I hope you know that a 0.2 ct stone is quite small. It measures 3.43 x 3.02 x 2.03 mm and you can draw this out on a sheet of paper to see its actual size.

This one is quite light but it is round and very well cut. As a 0.3 ct stone, it will also be 1 mm bigger than the above and is well below your budget. 4.33 - 4.34 x 2.57 mm The colour will be enhanced a little if you use rose gold.

Link 6598 is a really sweet 0.19 ct oval. The saturation is intense and the elongated shape makes it look a bit bigger than one might expect. 4.91 x 2.83 x 1.71 mm.

I am not crazy about link 5372 = 0.22 ct radiant. A bit over budget with good colour but it just doesn't seem clear and sparkly in the picture.

I have no idea how 4154 = 0.19 ct radiant came to be graded as fancy intense pink. I hope it's just a bad picture. The edges look pink but the table looks like a brownish orangish pink mish-mash.

A bit steep from your budget but is a very pleasing sweet light pink and has a very noticeable size. 0.43 ct fancy light pink oval measuring 5.14 x 3.88 x 2.66 mm

If you think your g/f is looking for colour and size then I'm not sure looking for a fancy coloured diamond in your budget will be possible. However, there are other coloured gemstones that would give more bang for your buck on her hand!

Before making any decisions, do as suggested and draw out the dimensions of a 3.5mm x 3.5mm stone. Unless your g/f has super tiny fingers or you are prepared to surround the stone with a halo to give a bigger look (which will increase budget) it may not give the desired look.

Thank you so much everyone for your comments- I reassessed the size of a 0.2 stone per your suggestions, and it is, indeed, too small! Thank you for steering me in the correct direction against this size, I greatly appreciate it. The 0.30 ct, 6857, that chrono suggested is of interest, but again- not sure if that will be too small.

Any other suggestions of coloured gemstones that would work is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much again :D .

So if she likes pink, what about a pink sapphire or spinel? If she is not fussed about treatment, for that amount of money, you could get her a heat treated sapphire, much bigger than the size of the diamond you were thinking, which would look great.

If her heart is set on a pink diamond but you also want finger coverage, what about doing a 5 stone band? You could put the pink diamond in the center and surround it with cz for now and replace them with white diamonds later on. If you went with .3 cr rounds the band would still look nice and blingy on the hand. You can get a feel for how it would look in the "show me your 5 stone" thread in the smtb forum.

What's her favorite color? You said she likes pink diamonds. What about a pink sapphire?
