Hey everyone, I want to thank you again for helping me so much on my quest to reset a RB family diamond into a new ring. I thought about a halo for a long time, but Diamondseeker helped me figure out that a halo is really too dressy [perfect word] for someone like me-- a low- maintenance stay-at-home mom of three girls.

So I've decided that my new ring will either be a solitaire or a trellis three-stone for all rounds. I have it narrowed down to four designs in total. Also, I should point out that I wear a size 8.75 ring and have short, pudgy fingers- like a toddler's hand, only bigger. :) My family stone is only 5.84mm, though it's technically .80 carat. I have, however, been reassured by several different reputable jewelers that it is well-cut for an older stone.

Advantages of three-stone: finger coverage; 3 stones symbolize my daughters.
Disadvantage: I won't want to wear it with a diamond band. Too blingy for me.

Advantages of solitaire: simple and classic; could later, as budget allows, wear with diamond band [I love Memoire Purity and Petite Prong bands].
Disadvantage: not as much finger coverage.

So, my two favorite trellis three-stone settings are:

BGD Crossed Trellis: http://tinyurl.com/cvvydar
and Yssie's lovely WF design: http://tinyurl.com/afrefdv

I guess my fear here is that my modest center stone won't look as nice as her 2+ carat in that setting! I love the simplicity of the BGD, but I also love the six prongs of "Butterflies" and the way it maintains the roundness of the center stone.

My two favorite solitaires are:

Vatche Caroline http://tinyurl.com/b4g2nv6 (closest I have found to the gorgeous Cartier 1895; would get without pave on the gallery)
and Mark Morrell Torchiere (Petite or not) http://tinyurl.com/ab3nf7o - just such a beautiful ring, and I have already reached out to Mark Morrell for info and he seems so lovely. I like that this has the roundness-enhancing six prongs, yet doesn't seem to be set impractically high, like some 6-prong designs.

Thoughts and comments appreciated, as always! And I would *love* to see handshots or hear experiences from anyone who has one of these rings.

well... as per my avatar... I'm kinda biased to this particular setting!! BGD Crossed Trellis: http://tinyurl.com/cvvydar I have the very same design but in princess cuts - it is sooooo comfortable to wear - it is well made, set low, easy to pair with another ring and on my 7.75 finger, gives me awesome coverage. Here are a few pics of my setting with my 1/2 eternity ring (and its blingy, but not what I'd consider "TOO" blingy...) and a 1mm RG spacer from DanielM on etsy.

I love my BGD ring - awesome customer service and quality!

I like the butterflies setting or the Mark Morrell solitaire, only because I much prefer 6 prongs for round stones. If you are concerned about finger coverage, I would go for the 3-stone.

Enerchi, this is just the sort of info I'm looking for! So glad to hear the BGD design is comfortable. And I love your rings! Thanks so much for sharing these pics!

Hi stargurl! I tend to agree about the 6 prongs. Gah, this is really hard because I truly think all 4 rings are just exquisite.

Not that I want to do this, but... just throwing this question out at the forum: I do think 3 of the 4 (not the MM) are standard catalog items, so I could return if I really had to, right? Even after being sized?

I am thinking that a 3 stone ring made for your specific three stones probably couldn't be returned, but I am not sure about that. There are rings that already have the sidestones preset, and that might be different. But you'd really have to ask the vendors that specific question. I think it would be good if you could go try some 3 stone rings and solitaires on in the size range you are looking at to see how you feel.

Well I have a 3 stone ring so I'm biased, but I would definitely go with that! The finger coverage is amazing. I like the Butterflies ring from WF, especially if you prefer 6 prongs. The only thing though, is that the side stones would only have 3 prongs on them, and I'm not sure how secure that is.

I started this thread a while back, it's for 3 stone rings with center stones less than one carat--you can see some nice examples and get an idea of how your potential ring might look:

Can you try both styles on (trip to tiffany?) and see what flatters your hand the best? I really think you should buy what looks best on you. Take pictures of each style.

Great points. I always feel kinda bad about trying on jewelry at my local B&M that I have no intention of buying, which I guess is silly! And it's tough for me to really know what it would feel like since the sample sizes are always so tiny they barely fit on my pinky! :)

Thanks so much for that link, Laila! I know what I will be doing for the rest of the afternoon... better get myself a pot of coffee! ;)

I never thought about the issue with 3 prongs = less security. Hmmmm. Off to search about that, too!

I am afraid to go to T&Co right before the holidays, but that's a great idea and I will do it ASAP! I do love my Tiffany. Not intimidating at all, and if memory serves, I feel like they may actually stock rings in my size.

I have a 3 stone ring with 3 prongs for the sidestones and did not experience any issues. The sidestones are pretty small though.

Hi Chrono, that's good to know. My sidestones would be small too, probably something like .50 ctw.

Yup, about the same cttw too. The basket is PT and the shank is 18K yellow gold. I was advised to use a PT basket for it.
