I just have to say I''m definately with you on wanting things funky and unique to your personality.

NY when I was in highschool I had preppy friends and goth friends. I went to college in a very liberal... hippy town. So I have well... alternative aspects to my personality. But I''ve always been very conservative too. My mother has been trying since I was a teen to get me to dress ''young'' and ''fun''... and well... I''ve never been that way... wanted to be, but never quite felt comfortable with it. The Bohemian thing though... I have definitely tendancies toward, still I never quite get there. For me its a balance of comfort and impulse. I have funky impulses, but for the most part I''m comfortable with well traditional things more. Still the funky rears it''s head everyonce in a while and the cakes definitely show the duality in my nature. LOL.

I REALLY want pictures of your cake if you do something like this though!

THIS deserves it''s own post.

My FMIL... doesn''t think either of them look like wedding cakes. Because they don''t have a bride and groom on top. She also wants me to wear a gown with sleeves... because in a church you have to wear sleeves... and I keep reminding her that we aren''t getting married in a church... lmao. I told her that the cakes are ''modern'' wedding cakes. Oy.

ha! You should show her the cake topper with the bride dragging the groom across the top of the cake... then she''ll be ok with the flowers!!! I think so many of those are just so TACKY. There are some lovely ones, but they are few and far between.

As for the sleeves... oy. I actually want sleeves and can barely find any! tell her it would just be too hard. and not required.

I think #1 is so cool looking. Maybe not for a wedding, but I like the chocolate ooze.

#2!

HAHAHAHAHAH. FOR REAL? You should photoshop in a bride and groom.. lol.... I can''t believe how outrageously expensive those little B&G cake toppers are.. like $50-$60.. nuts.. I really don''t think MOST wedding cakes have brides and grooms on them anymore.. Mine just had flowers..

Is it stil true you have to wear sleeves in a church wedding or is it just certain churches like a catholic church? my FSIL is getting married in a christian church and if thats the case I think I should tell her to re-think her strapless gown..... I vote for cake# 2 it looks like a wedding cake I like cake 1 as well but it just doesnt scream elegant wedding to me BUT if you want to be funky go for number one it looks better tasting haha

She is Catholic. We aren't. She is assuming a Catholic church. I doubt your friend has anything to worry about, but she might want to check.

She was emailing pics of gowns with sleeves for a while there. She finally gave up though. now of course I'm going to be getting pics of cake toppers. Yeah... she's very set in her ways and anything different is not okay.

But you know what? I'm moving accross the country... I have a delete button. And it's all good!

ya ill remind her thanks!

The first cake looks like it''s bleeding!

I vote for cake #2

OK, that''s funny, because I tend to think that cakes look tacky with a topper. There''s something about a plastic bride/groom on a cake that screams "ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" to me.

You guys are making me so paranoid! Do you hate THIS topper? Suspiciously named "decostopper" ... but don''t let that title prohibit your disgust! (I should add that it''s only 2 1/2 inches high, & will adorn a cupcake on top of a tower of like cupcakes)

*sniff*

Deco hit it on the head for me...it''s not that #1 isn''t wedding-y....it''s more that I thought it looked like someone shot it and it was in the throes of death.

LOL. It''s the dripping that''s doing it.

Deco, I really love that!! You guys are going to think it''s soooo cheesy, the one we have. I''ve got a thing about ladybugs, and everyone has associated them with me since I was little- my fiance, too. So our topper is a little red wooden topper thing. It''s actually in the Modern Bride best of Everything issue- but it''s as a toy for the kid''s table! In the issue they had a little "blackboard" sticky on it and the kid''s name written on it. It''s two wooden ladybugs holding hands and facing each other (or something else, if I turn them around), it''s one of those toys you push the bottom up and the bugs collapse. We love it- it''s very "us" and it was given as a stocking stuffer years ago.

Deco - that one is cool! No worries! It doesn''t have an ounce of cheese!

And Amber... I think that''s AWESOME!

lol at first i thought the first one looked cool! but then i could see how people could say it looked a little freaky...

i agree if you like the drippy look, do white chocolate (or you could have them color the white chocolate to make it another color i guess), white choco with pink roses would be pretty, but i really do love the 2nd cake, to me that''s a very beautiful classic wedding cake, and i agree doing a colored set of pearls OR adding some color with the flowers and leaving all else white would be lovely.

i love funky wedding cakes but i also love classic. i don''t think you can go wrong as long as it doesn''t have those 80''s plastic asymmetrical tiers going on!!!

OK.. I am goin against the grain and will say I just love the first one. it is totally against the normal boring wedding cake. I think it is delightfully unique. IMO

Re: cakes I like the second one maybe with different colored flowers. A little traditional for my own tastes, but #1 is a bit too extreme IMHO. Very cool, but not wedding-ish.

Re: Toppers... I think a topper that''s personal to someone (Amber, Deco) adds a great creative touch to the cake. It''s the generic plastic ones I hate, and it''s unlikely that they hold any real personal significance to the couple who has them.

Good luck
jen

I also wanted to add, since I never commented before, that of the two, I would rather eat the first. I''m a chocoholic to the extremes (when I''m not wedding-dress-dieting), and that first one just makes my mouth water. The second one IS classic. But I would do the first, no doubt.

I find the second cake a little stuffy.

I second (third?) the idea of creating a scalloped or lacy design in place of the drips on cake #1. I saw a cake with Mehndi-style detailing on it that created the same kind of ''coverage'' as the chocolate drips, in chocolate over a white cake. It was lovely.

I absolutely love cake #1. I''m not sure how it would look with the pink, though. I made FI come over and look at it too, but he didn''t like it.

Deco that one is FUN! Not cheesy at all. I agree its the plastic ones with the cheap lace tacked on looks terrible.

I really do like the idea of #1. I think Martha Stewart''s assistant Darcy? Marcy? had white with dark chocolate lace cut outs....this is the same idea with the chocolate contrast...But I think #1 done wrong can be very wrong...and look messy...

I think #2 is a classic. I pick #2...

Thank you EVERYONE! The bakers I've talked to are going to give me qoutes on the second cake. The granache as a design I will ask about when I meet with them at the end of September. I'm leaning toward the second cake... but am thinking the first one would be an interesting idea to do a grooms cake around... without the flowers. Maybe with a chocolate or caramel buttercream underneath instead of the white. I think that would be really nice.

#2 for a wedding
but I want to eat that first cake right now !!

#2. I think it will go w/the flower mock up you did for the centerpieces better.

My tummy agrees.

Wow two cakes, Gypsy! Lucky groom.

Deco, that topper is fun!

Hey Gypsy!

Sorry! I haven''t really read this thread in a while, but I found this picture while on the net. It saws a cake similar to the first one!

I really didn''t like the first choice, but LOVED this one!

Thanks! The top of that one looks perfect for a groom''s cake.

I vote for #2. It would be pretty with some white/green hydrangeas.
