Hi everyone, I'd love some advice around which gold is the most suitable for some rings I'm having reset. Warning!! Potentially long winded story to follow - sorry!

So one of the rings I'm having reset is my engagement ring. Hubby and I have separated (it's all good, we're still close friends but better friends than partners!) and I want to have my avc reset into a signet/gypsy style - inspo photo to follow. I would be wearing this ring as an everyday ring, and I want it in rose gold with a satin finish.

The other ring is a 5 stone that I bought from Whiteflash a few years ago. It has 5 beautiful aca's but I find the setting, whilst lovely, just doesn't suit my lifestyle and I rarely wear it. I am going to have the 5 aca's reset into a band style with the diamonds bead set. This would also become an everyday ring, again set in rose gold with either platinum or white gold prongs. The design is similar (but different, no engraving, obviously not full eternity) to CVB's Corsica band.

So my question is this (if you haven't become bored yet and given up reading) what karat gold do I have these set into? The jeweller I am using has said nice diamonds are generally set in 18k, which I get but I'm not overly keen on the colour of 18k rose gold, it seems quite yellow to my eye, though the jeweller did say he could adjust the colour somewhat. I actually really like the colour of 9k as it's a softer pink but from what I've read putting nicer diamonds in 9k is a no-no. In Australia jewellers seem to only work with 18k or 9k, I did ask my jeweller about 14k, he said he can do it but once it's costed out you may as well have gone the 18k. From what I've read, the issue for most jewellers with 9k is that it can be brittle and have integrity issues, but I follow a number of antique jewellery dealers on instagram and they often have rings in lower karats of gold that have clearly stood the test of time. The other thing I have to consider is the cost, not surprisingly 18k is double the cost of 9k and if I'm honest, to have these rings reset in 18k would cost me more than I had budgeted for.

So what karat would you choose and why? Is it a terrible thing to have good quality diamonds set in lower karat gold and if so why?
Have you ever had integrity/structural issues with lower a karat gold ring?

Thanks so much for staying with me here and reading this! I'll attach a pic of my rings as they are now, then the signet/gypsy inspo ring for my avc. The 5 stone as I mentioned above is to be bead set into a band style sort of similar to CVB's Corsica. I want to make it clear that the CVB pic is for inspo only as it was the best example I could find that was similar to what I wanted.

Rose gold is quite varied in the tone depending on the alloy used. I'm in Australia also and working with a local jeweller and was given a 14ct and 18ct option for white gold though. If you like a particular shade it might be worth getting the 14ct that you wanted. I'm actually ordering a ring from the US and ended up changing my mind about the rose gold as much as I wanted it because I think getting a matching band here will have a different rosey color to it.

9ct wasn't worth it for me cause there's hardly any gold in there.

14ct is my favourite for rose gold, I find so much rose is really yellow. My jeweller custom made my 18ct rose gold e-ring and wedding ring, as I requested the pinkest rose possible in 18ct. I have a few pieces from the US in 14ct, and I much prefer the 'rosiness' of it.

I love your inspiration pictures
Although most ER seem to be 18 carot here I don't see the problem with 9 carot - or am o missing something?

its not going to hurt the diamond but if you stack its worth taking into account your other rings

Go for what ever colour you like the best

Thanks for replying Ladies! Yes the variety in rose gold is pretty broad. I found the jewellers 18k rose was really bright and more yellow looking than the softer pink that I was after and 18k yellow just does not suit my skin tone. I think 14k maybe a good compromise and hopefully a bit friendlier to my budget!

So the ring I'm getting made was $2500 for 18ct and $2200 for 14ct. Lol a little discount..

Thanks Daisys and Diamonds! I probably wouldn't be stacking them with other rings. Yes, most people here use 18 for e'rings & wedding rings also. I guess my thing was that I prefer the colour of lower karat rose gold but some jewellers here seem to be reluctant to set diamonds in the lower karat gold. I agree with you though, I should just go with what I prefer - thanks for your thoughts!

Okay, that's about what I figured 14k might come in at. I was quoted $2000 for 18k in the band setting so I guess 14 would come in at about $1700, so a touch cheaper but at least it would be closer to the colour I wanted. Looks like 14k might be a goer!

That's perfect! Yay for saving money. To be honest if I wasn't going the white gold then I wouldn't get 18ct. I actually prefer yellow gold but part of me thinks white gold is more timeless lol plus it's good to have a mixture of both to change. Since gold prices were going through the roof I wondered if they could salvage all the white gold I had lying around to contribute to this piece. I was told that white gold is harder to refine and prone to breaking when reused. Maybe that was a sign not to get white gold lol.

Now you're making me want to change my mind to rose gold lol I might get a cheap rose gold band to see if it suits my skin tone.

I hear ya! I love white gold as well but if I'm honest rose gold has always been my favourite and I think it suits my skin tone better. We just need to win lotto so that we can have multiple sets of rings in multiple colours of gold!!!

I only wear white metals, and would use Platinum, 18K or 14K for the nicer pieces, and 9K or 10K or even Rhodium-plated Silver for inexpensive pieces and CSs.

DK :))

I don’t know if this will help, but is it possible to ask if your jeweller could use something like this? They have a few different colour and alloy mixes to choose from E2AD8B76-8C91-496D-AECA-0443E6B300B4.jpeg

Thanks @HollyC I've just been to a different jeweller today & I really like the colour of his 18k rose gold so I've bitten the bullet, blown the budget and gone with 18k for both rings. Thanks for the info though!

Great news. Look forward to seeing them when they are finished. :)

Woo hoo! Please post pics of the finished rings if you can! I adore rose gold.

Another vote for coming back with finished rings; don’t leave us hanging!

Don't worry I'll definitely be back for show n' tell, though it's going to be quite the wait, this jeweller is super busy so he won't be starting them until January which means they probably won't be finished until February.......and so the painful waiting game begins!

Hahaha don't worry I know how it feels. I don't think my ring will be finished until Christmas. But feel free to come share your excitement any time. The waiting game might be long but we are here to keep you sane.
