Hello All,

So I'm in the process of searching for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I know the exact setting she wants which is a Neil
Lane linked right here>>>: co-19-preview_1.png

Basically I'm in some real help with a stone I've found at a jeweler located in the diamond district that has come highly recommended from friends of mine. The diamond would cost me $8,500 + $3,300 for the setting (the jeweler will have it made) + $1,000 (The jewelers stated commission) for a total cost of $12,800. Here are the specs:

GIA certified and laser inscribed.

Carat Weight 1.55 carat
Measurements: 6.54 X 6.46 X 4.25mm
Depth: 65.9%
Table: 59%
Culet: None

Color Grade: F
Clarity Grade: SI2
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: Faint

Also on the GIA vert it states these flaws:
Feather, Twinning Wisp, Crystal, Natural, and Indented Natural

I wanted to take that stone and use it at the center stone for a custom made setting imitating the Neil Lane setting (Since the Neil Lane setting is over budget). Also the above listed diamond specs are from a diamond I did see in person and appeared eye clean although I will definitely go and look again.

Please help me with this as I'm obviously trying to learn as much as I can but I'm still a novice at this point.

Re: Please help with 1.55ct Cushion Modified Brilliant stone

I do not understand the $1000 for the commission. Wouldn't this have been built into the stone/setting cost?

Re: Please help with 1.55ct Cushion Modified Brilliant stone

I dont understand the commission either. Why is the jeweler getting the commission ?

Also did you see the diamond in person ? Request an ASET ? Is it Eye clear ?
Do you have the GIA Cert # ?

Nothing about this really sounds kosher. I'd reach out to PS approved vendors and see what they can do for you.
Also @ 3300 for the setting, you can have get ERD make a custom setting similar/same for less than that.

Re: Please help with 1.55ct Cushion Modified Brilliant stone

Sorry for the confusion. The $1,000 commision is because the jewler was honest and stated that he makes 10% on the iteams he sells. I'm supposedly getting the stone and setting for wholesale cost and the 10% (which is approx. $1,000) is his profit. I actually do find the jewler to be trustworthy and am mostly concerned with the stone itself. I've been referred to this jewler by multiple friends and associates and he is located in the diamond district in New York. My main concern is weather or not that stone is priced reasonably? Also I do have the GIA certificate at home but I dont have the cert# on me now although I can post it later. I saw the stone in person and it was eye clean.

There isn't enough information to tell whether the cushion is well cut or a dud. GIA or any other labs will not provide this information.

Doesn't hurt to check with IDJ. He's also in the Diamond District. You can probably run the gia number by him too. And possibly have him show you similar stones in the price range.

Re: Please help with 1.55ct Cushion Modified Brilliant stone

I know that GIA is the most respected cert. for round stones and although ths cushion cut is not I still would not purchase a stone without a GIA cert. What would be another good cert. to go along with the GIA that would be better for cushion cut stones?
Also, does anyone have any reccomendations or other reputible dealers in the diamond district so that I can have some comparisons? I know that I want the exact setting I listed in my original post (custom made of course).

In a setting like the one I chose what is more important for the center stone (color/clarity)? Basically my budget overall for the center stone and setting is $13,000. I just want to be sure that I'm getting the most for my money because I want to see her face light up when I finally do propose!

I appreciate all the help this forum and its members provide. Thanmk you all!!!

GIA is the only lab I would trust for fancies, and one memo is sufficient. What I am asking about is the light performance of the cushion. Cut is so rarely discussed outside of Pricescope but this is what makes the stone sparkle or look dead. Colour and clarity do not affect sparkle unless it is really bad.

I'm guessing you're good with the Cushion Modified Cut. If you're not tied to cushion modified, and open to Cushion Brilliant/Old Mine Cuts, you can check those out as well.

Reach out to
ID Jewelry ( 47th )
Engagement Ring Direct ( 5th ave bet 47/48 )
Good Old Gold ( Long Island )
James Allen ( if you check out their beta site you can see the diamond at 40x with rotation ). ( you can also see upto 3 stones in their NY office )

Are some you can check out.

Pricing wise, IDJ is very competitive. I was offered same stone (confirmed via GIA #) from him vs another and I don't recall if it was 600 or 800 less from IDJ.

I purchased an AGS graded cushion diamond.

Re: Please help with 1.55ct Cushion Modified Brilliant stone

I know this is asking alot but does anyone have any reccomendations regaring finding a setting that matches the Neil Lance setting in my original post via online? I cant find any website that can provide this setting? Also, what would be the best website for a cushion cut center stone online?
