Perhaps think a moment about what sort of pink you really want also. The last two are quite different - the concave is a much more lavender pink to my mind while the Wilds' is a dusky pink - which do you favour?

Haha this is eye you're the expert. Is call it baby pink and rosie pink.

Actually both rosie pink and baby pink is fine for me   For the concave cutting one, richard said he is not so sure about the availability of the stone until Monday ;( ;(

A week from now Monday??

What metal are you setting this in? I feel like if you want white with pave I like the baby pink. Gives it a more , I dunno, high end vibe. Like a Tiffany feel or something. A vibe I'm sure I'm not conveying well. Lol. The rosy with say a yellow gold give and give it a more nature feel.

yes a week from now...richard is doing gem show now. I wanna set it in white gold or silver. :D

Bummer on the wait - does that put you out of return period with this one or will there be time to compare them in hand?

Also a *whew* because I initially thought someone else had put it on hold! So pleased that isn't the case.

Either WG or silver (even argentium?) would look lovely. Could you also tell what sort of light the photos were taken in? They look a little dark but the stone bears out first thoughts about it looking more like the end colour of the vendor photo.

Its okay for the waiting since I am not in a rush. I just hope the gemstone is still available next Mon, Richard is not sure if it is sold or not. :nono: :nono:

I am not sure what sort of light the photos were taken in. Is that I could see the colour better when it is in handshot???

Apologies Kathy, my brain's on holiday at the moment - it thought you had the gem and had taken the handshots - of course you asked for handshots from the vendor. Anyway it confirms that it's more like a rosie than a baby ;)

*sigh* I think I should delay posting anything else until tomorrow when my attention span may have renewed itself. *sigh*

OP - my apologies if I'm telling you something you already know, but if you are new to colored stones I just wanted to make sure that you are aware that a concave cut stone will have a different look than a traditionally cut gemstone, and may not be to everyone's taste.

Did you already have setting ideas? I'd love to see some.

Niel, i may go for those simple tiffany look....like with diamond halo and WG or silver. I wanna make it simple. Its just my initial idea! :naughty: :naughty: i saw there are a lot setting vendors with fancy settings...but I am not very comfortable shipping the gem to another country for setting. I will probably let my local jewelry store for setting.

Do you like the way it looks? That's what matters.

You can also youtube "concave cut gem" get a look at it in motion.

Makes sense he's not around. Hopefully it's still there when he gets back. Has a nice pink color to my eyes. Especially for white metal. I think a simple halo sounds amazing.

I second/third the recommendation to view a video of concave cutting to see if you like this look.
Flat faceted - traditional large bold flash, slower on/off effect.
Concave - shimmery look (some call it static), very quick on/off effect. I like this cut for pale or light coloured stones since it amps up colour.

What did Eric say about this stone?

It's extremely hard to know whether the one desirable colour showing in this photograph (bright pink in top half) is the prevalent colour or not. There's facet flash, reflection, grey, brown and you name it. It's a miserable photo of what might either be a pretty stone or a "dog".

A pity really that a vendor of Swala's calibre expect someone to have any idea what this gem looks like from it's photo - even if their sales ploy is just to get someone to enquire about the gem :nono:

Eric said it's eye clean, excellent cut and polish. I have sent an email to him asking about the exact colour of the gem and also handshot of it....

Good-oh... it will be really interesting to see what it looks like! :))

I don't like how this oval is cut. It appears to have a huge bowtie. I think light colored stones have to be cut well, in comparison to darker stones that can hide a cut.

Please make sure to consider Swala's return policy, I could be mistaken, but I thought they either didn't have one or it was very restrictive.

I do see a bowtie in the gems...i'd prefer a pretty cut for my gemstone :D

Thanks carmen! i read that it's hard to return to Swala...i will consider that!!

I would seriously consider other vendors before I bought a Burmese stone from Swala. Swala specializes in stones from East Africa and as far as I know has no leg up on stones from Southeast Asia. If I were you, I would be looking at Gary Braun who recently traveled there I believe, Jeff Davies, and, if you are willing to go the ebay route, Tan's stores (check the stickie thread on vendors at the top of the page as I can't remember the name of his stores). There is also Uppergems which has some beautiful spinels as well. All in all, Swala, due to the restrictions on returning stones and given that they are not known to have any more expertise than others in spinels from that region, I would go to them only as a last resort. HTH.

Totally agree with others that Swala would be perhaps difficult for you to deal with as a first-timer and you have many options before going that route, something I've read about here many times and which piece of information I forgot. Apologies!
