I heard about polar ice diamonds today while I was at work and have done some research. I understand that they are mined in Canada and all that but is there a gimmick to them? What makes them desirable? Are they less expensive? Rare? Thanks in advance!

One of the traits that make canadian diamonds desirable on the market over other diamonds is that they are from a conflict free zone and many people like that idea.

Canadian diamonds are also known for their high quality. Another great thing about them (besides being fully conflict free) is the Canadian government's protection of land, wildlife, and indigenous people surrounding the mines. The Canadian government also requires that a certain percentage of diamonds be cut within Canada--not as much outsourcing.

I`m a proud owner of a Sirius Polar Bear princess diamond and it`s lovely!

I think they are rare and desirable in the sense that not only are they mined in Canada, but they are cut and polished here also. The whole rough to cut diamond process is done in Canada by Canadians (or citizens working in Canada

) and they follow tight quality control Canadian laws. Also, because the whole process was done following our Employment Laws, employees all across the production board are paid fair and competitive wages and this adds to the overall markup attributed to the diamond.

Not all diamonds mined in Canada truly fit the "Made in Canada" claim. Some are mined here but cut and polished in other countries.

"There are currently two requirements to the Bureau''s analysis of a "Made in Canada" representation. First, the Bureau determines whether the product "came into being" in Canada. Secondly, the Bureau assesses the amount of Canadian direct labour and/or material that went into the various components of the final product.
For the product to have "come into being" in Canada, the last substantial production operation must have been performed in Canada and result in a new and identifiable final product. In other words, the important and significant stage of manufacturing that transformed the product into its final form has to have occurred in Canada. For the second requirement, it is expected that the product came into being in Canada with a Canadian direct labour and /or material content of at least 51% of the total production cost of the product."

In terms of price, there is a premium and it`s totally up to you to decide whether it`s worth paying depending on your personnal values and preferences.

So what is the percent price premium for, say a 1ct round?

I''ll bet it is substantial, like 30%
