I have an upcoming project and am considering claw prongs, possibly even double claws... I love my half bezel solitaire. It's protective, tough, and doesn't catch on stuff. I'm not rough on my jewelry, but when it comes to every day wear are claw prongs a hassle?

IMO, it depends on the quality of workmanship.

Agree. Of all the rings I've ever had, only one occasionally caught on my clothing, & on that ring the prongs kept loosening & I had to get them tightened. I was too young & ignorant to realize I needed a re-set -- eventually lost the beautiful tourmaline when it fell out of the setting. Never have had that problem any other time.

I have a pair of 8-prong studs from BGD with little claws on each of the prongs and I thought my hair would get caught in them but it's never happened.

I have a double-claw prong solitaire that I wear nearly every day and it doesn't get caught on stuff. I do have to pick the occasional bit of lint out of it though.

I just have the occasional fluff or fibre but have never had claws catch on any clothing or hair.

I have found the occasional fiber while I am cleaning my rings but never felt it catch or pull when wearing them. I believe it all depends on the workmanship (how closely it holds the stone and if the edges are filed down).

Thank you for the feedback so far! It's reassuring, but also highlights the importance of choosing the right person to do the work. There are some affordable ready made mounts in the style I want, but I don't know of a bench that could/would take a setting and loose gem a la carte just to set it and do some really great prongs. I thought I had found a bench locally and I gave her several small projects to try her out. There were a few flaws in her work, such as an abraded facet during setting, uneven laser welding on a repair, and a crooked seat on a setting. Because of that, I don't feel I can trust her with anything really important to me.

JewelFreak, I really love your ring and Michael E is at the top of my list if I end up going fully custom. I'm glad to hear you haven't had any problems with it.

Thank you again, and keep the votes coming :)

Bluebirrrd, Michael is top notch to work with. He's really serious & flexible about giving his customer what she wants & at the same time, honest about what will work & what won't. Since that ring was my first custom project, I was grateful for the latter. Quality of his work is excellent. Whoever does it, will look forward to seeing pics sometime!

My double-claw prongs are Michael E., and I highly recommend him. I chose him for two reasons: 1) because of all the recommendations here on pricescope, and 2) his prong work looked very delicate (and it is!)

Look at the prongs distance from the stone with a 10x loupe, they can be made tight if they are not already. Best regards, Lee
