Hi Colored Gem Lovers!!!

Would it be ok if I picked your brain?

Is this Amethyst a good investment? Would it be a significant addition to any jewelry collection?

It depends on what you mean by investment. If you want to make money off of it, then no. I wouldn't say it's atrocious, as in your poll, but it's very ordinary.

It is an unexceptional color for an amethyst, as it is a flat light pinkish purple. Fine amethyst is a medium dark violet purple with red flashes. However, amethyst is typically an inexpensive stone, and you will probably not get a return for what you paid. However, if I wanted to add a fine piece to my collection, that would not be the color I would be looking for.

Be careful also where you buy amethyst as there are many synthetic pieces on the market.

agree with TL. Buy it because you like it.

Very few stones are investments, as I have found out. Of real investment stones, very few are shown on the PS, and I think that even long-time collectors have to spend a lot of time to chase them. Another way to look at it is, if the stone is eye-pleasing to you, it will likely be to someone else. An example would be Bob Kast's tourmaline - it was cheap but so pretty. I know I can easily resell it to a layperson because everyone likes it.

Your stone is a fine example of gem sculpture. You have to look at it yourself and see if you like the color. Not the vendor, not the name of the stone, just the color. If you do, someone else definitely will, too and at least you'll be able to get your $$ back if you decide to sell it.

Thanks for letting me pick your brain TL and Crasru!!

TL-This gem is on Litnon. Wouldn't intend to make a profit. Just thought the cut was very unique. Per his discription it is a medium amethyst purple, from Brazil, non-treated, and all natural. So hopefully it's genuine.

Arcadian-You are right! A person should make gem purchases based on what they like. Why else would there be soooo many gems to choose from.

Crasru- You have an excellent point. No investment, just get what's eye-pleasing! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The sculpture of gem is pretty interesting.

Thanks Ladies!!!!

Linton is reputable. I tend to avoid Brazilian amethyst. I have never seen a good example of it. If you like it, then buy it, but you may want to search out some African, Four Peaks, Georgia, or Uruguayan material for comparison.

For me it depends on the size and the price.

It's a pretty enough stone - as others have said, not the BEST colourwise, but it's certainly not atrocious and its a lot nice than many I've seen.

Also the unusual shape is nice IMO, but I like unusual things :appl:

If you plan to set it you will almost certainly have to go custom, but in the hands of the right jeweller, it could be made into a stunning piece.

Thanks, I was taken by the cut as well! Very unique! The color was ok, but is flawless, price was right and the size was GREAT! To me it is "magically delicious"

Dan and Caren did A custom pendant for it.

It is fairly unique, but I think it was either Vlad or Mickey (can't remember which) and I that have cut very similar cuts in the last three months. BUT, it was the first time I have seen it cut. I got to cut mine from material from Diamond Hill that was JXR color and it is going to be an engagement ring (for the owner of Diamond Hill).

The design is a kite. The one I cut was a variation of Crown of Life by Charles Lookingbill which was in New Mexico Facetor, Apr 89, v6n7. That has a step cut pavilion and a step cut crown with a cross in it. I cut the left and right corners on the one I did because I always worry about acute angles on amethyst. It is prone to pressure flaking.

Is it an investment? Buy a gem because you like it. Commodities markets as investiments are risky. Amethyst is pretty common, so think of it more like a Beanie Baby. If it were Four Peaks, JXR, Diamond Hill, or some other rarer mine, maybe. But I would not bet the farm on it.

Thank you very much Crasru!!!! I love the piece.

This is how it looks on with a 16in 14k wg thin rope chain...I love Dan and Carens work. Always a positive experience!

And on top of everything, with your neck and shoulders, you should model necklaces. Congratulations!

It is very beautiful, especially on you. Personally amethyst doesn't really do it for me, because of the vast quantities of it I see in Feng Shui shops being displayed as a healing crystal. A bit of my own personal disconnect.

Glad to see it as a pendent and looking so pretty.
