So, did looking at rings and seeing the actual price of them seem to ignite any sort of desire within him to save up for a ring? Did the experience go well? Did you catch a glimmer of excitement in his eyes while he considered a life spent loving you forever?

I hope it went well!! Or at least that you gained insight!

Pookie, welcome to PS!

Ditto to everyone''s posts, really.

A little personal perspective,
My fiance and I dated for four and a half years before we got engaged. And we started dating as juniors in high school. We got engaged a couple months ago, I''ll graduate in Dec, him in May, we''ll marry in June. And he spent about half the average on my sapphire ring, which I love. The point is, we dated young, only ever dated one another, will marry straight out of college, and got something he could afford. BUT: we dated for a long time. And had open and honest conversation about how we felt about each other''s financial situaiton. There was nothing off limits for discussion--and shouldn''t be, if you''re considering marriage. My fiance knew that the cost of the ring wasn''t important, but the effort he put into finding something I would love.
I would say talk to you guy again after looking at rings and try to understand where he''s coming from. Is he only telling you $600 to see if that''s not "good enough" and testing your love? Who knows. He is confusing me!

Best of luck to you, and keep us posted. Please don''t let us hurt your feelings assuming bad things about your guy, we just tend to be protective of our fellow PSers, like we said earlier!
