Now that I have my first diamond ring, I am obsessive about cleaning it. I soak it for a few minutes daily in Windex and give it a little scrub with a toothbrush to make it sparkly and new. Other posts on this site talk about cleaning with Windex, but I haven''t found any posts discussing whether too much Windex is a bad thing. My ring is 14Kt white gold with a platinum setting. Is it possible to hurt either of these metals with daily soaks in Windex with ammonia? Thanks!

I have read that amonia is fine for Platinum, but not good for WG. I have WG and use Mr Clean, Dawn dish liquid. I don''t think it would hurt to use Windex ocassionally, but I wouldn''t soak, just a quick scrub.

One of the experts on this forum once said that soaking in ammonia cleaners for long periods can seriously damage white gold, and I think that soaking in anything isn''t the best for platinum either--something about porosity? They said cleaning with it is fine, just no long-term soaking.

I second the Mr. Clean suggestion. I use it in my US and it works at least as well as ammonia with no stinky fumes.

Do you think a spritz of Windex every now and then could hurt it?

Nope.

Then, Mr. Clean it is! I''m running out tomorrow to get some. Thanks, everyone.
