Prayers for Southern California

Can't go over 10% of whatever the price/rent was prior to the disaster.

I read that, so I guess I should have said that it sounds like people are ignoring it and hoping not to get caught?

We have laws, but people try to skirt them. No one actively polices it, meaning they have to be reported by someone in order for law enforcement to go after them, so if victims don't know the laws, they will get screwed. I certainly hope there's a lot of outreach in LA and neighboring counties to help people. There will be scammers and gougers until the very last building is replaced.

I thought CA had laws against gouging?

i hope so,
landlords seem to think the law doesn't apply to them and the police are probably too busy keeping out looters and closing roads
actually im not sure who polices price gouging
here it might be the commerce commision but as has been said someone has to report it
there will always be some low life trying to take advantage in a disaster
the media should be naming and shaming

California's Anti-Price Gouging Law:

I have a theory of exactly why landlords are getting away with this crime.
The biggest fire, Palisades, destroyed thousands of homes of extremely rich people.
Because so many rich have lost their homes and can easily pay practically anything to get what they want, many landlord are getting away with it.
Otherwise we wouldn't be reading so many of these stories.

Sure, they could report the crime, but why bother when you're very rich and are accustomed to getting everything you want and getting it NOW.

Most if not all of them own more than one home and some could probably relocate for awhile giving the less fortunate a chance at finding rentals.

Is it possible there are rent wars the same way people offer much more than asking price for homes? It seems conceivable that people would offer more than the owners were asking to secure a place they really wanted. Would that be considered iIlegal?

I ain't no lawyer, but I'd guess, "Hell Yes." ... at least for home sales.

But 2 renters competing for a property may be different.
Lets say both applicants fully qualified for the full asking price, but one volunteered to pay more.
If the loser somehow found out, they may have a case (at least ethically) if not a legal case.

But that's a good question.

Another horrible fire. Please stay safe everyone who is in the area. Thinking of you.

this is what happened after our Christchurch earthquakes
the next week many families had moved sticks to their holiday homes and the local schools of these holiday towns suddenly had bulging rolls
it was good for the kids to have some normality of going to school
