Baby carriers- Ideally, you want a carrier that keeps your baby''s legs in a froggy-legged position (when they''re teensy tiny) or their hips splayed (when they''re a little older), as those positions are ideal for hip and spine development. Especially since your back is a consideration, you also would get something that either distributes weight mainly around your hips (like an Ergo, mei tai, or Beco) or all around your frame (like a Moby or a woven wrap). I found a Moby to be very useful at first but it has a fairly short lifespan for me - I didn''t like it once he hit about 15 lbs, although I do know people who still use them for their 30 lb toddlers. The Ergo isn''t the most useful until they hit 4 months minimum as you''re not supposed to use it without the infant insert until they can sit on their own and/or they''re grabbing at their feet, but once you can use it, it''s just the best. (Caveat: I think that shorter women sometimes prefer a Beco to an Ergo.) I''ve had back surgery before but I can seriously wear him in the Ergo for hours, no pain. You can froggy-leg or splay their legs in slings, but the lack of anything around my mid-section to distribute weight well for me leaves me unable to use it for more than like 15 minutes.
I''ve found that I personally don''t have much patience for wraps, and so for baby #2 we''re going to use our BabyHawk mei tai for the newborn phase on up and also our Ergo once he/she''s old enough. But I know people who pretty much use wraps exclusively. A lot of it is personal preference.
