i seriously considered the bob since everyone just loves it, but def check your size constraints if you dont have a huge car or an SUV and plan to use it as your ''main'' stroller. the bob would not fit with wheels in the back of our audi a3 without potentially a fair amt of maneuvering, something i didn''t want to deal with on a daily basis. if it''s just for home or walking/jogging then that wouldn''t matter.

for us the main stroller for car had to be lightweight and easy to fold. we''re down to the city jogger mini or the valco latitude for ''full size'' options but xtremely small footprint (17 and 18lbs). but we''ll start with SNG.

the bobs i have seen locally in-use with infants in them have the car seat adapters.
I would not, ever ever ever use the BOB as the one and only main stroller. No way. It''s a beast to keep folded and move around. I also wouldn''t consider it unless you have a bigger car. With the BOB, I really think you need another lightweight "errand" stroller such as the SnG or an umbrella stroller. You may not need a "full" size stroller at all and have the BOB later for active stuff with the kid. The BOB is worth it for walks around the block alone. I swear by it, as long as people have realistic expectations of what it does.

Mara, if you start with the SnG and use that for awhile, I would think that an umbrella stroller would suit your purposes afterward. Volos can be had for 100 bucks. Depending on when your child walks, a stroller can end up being a waste of money, and they are so expensive I think you have the right idea starting with the SnG.

The thing is, SnG''s push like molasses and are unsophisticated. But man, are they ever practical.

I have a van though so it being bigger didn't matter. I don't jog/run either so I didn't need a stroller specifically for that purpose. I've had several stollers, peg perego (didn't like b/c there were no cup holders at that time, schwinn double umbrella (wide and a pain at the mall or in stores) multiple umbrellas (love for when kids are preschool age). I do have a jog stroller we picked up at a garage sale in case the mood would ever strike that I do want to run with the kid, I still use the Chicco stroller when I'm out with Jake though. I'm a cup holder nut though and like that both he and I have spots for drinks. I agree with the others that going to a store and pushing some around is the only way to know what will work for you.

One last thing...if anyone is considering the carseat attachment to use the carseat with the BOB, please consider. The attachment is 50 bucks. A new SnG is just a tad bit more (and much cheaper secondhand). Bringing the BOB with carseat on it to restaurants, etc is asking for a massive headache because it''s no fun to park in crowded places. If the fit is really tight, wtih a SnG you can just take the carseat out, carry it and fold the SnG and put it near you somewhere. You can do this all yourself (meaning carry both carseat and SnG at the same time) as a mom out and about alone. Try doing that with the BOB...NOT going to happen.

If you want to take the kid out for a walk, it is BETTER for the child to be in the BOB with the back reclined and in a snuzzler. Better for their heads when it comes to plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) and for spine issues. I would minimize carseat use if you can for that reason alone.

IMHO, it makes no sense to get the attachment for the BOB unless you have a duallie and a toddler.

yeah TG that is why we figure start with the SNG and then just see. also who knows what the kid will prefer. a few of my friends kids didn't want to be in the stroller very often after walking, so they just have cheapie umbrellas or lightweight strollers.

we do like to walk a lot though, so that is why i like the idea of the city jogger mini in particular since SNG won't be very fun. at first we can do the carriers with baby. city mini seems like it can be a good walking and full size lightweight that fits in our car at the same time. i am not a fan of the 'athletic look' of it so much... but if we end up with one stroller within a few months, it would prob be a good option. i really like that it's only 17 lbs and there is a local store we saw it at as well.

for anyone researching, def agree get into a store and see as many strollers as you can in person. sometimes online i would think i liked something but then in person i just wouldn't like it as much or it would look bulky or fold clunkily or whatever. you might not have one store that has EVERYTHING you want to see but usually you can see 95%+ of what is sold out there in 2-3 local stores or near a big city.

Mara, I think DD had the jogger mini and then switched to the BOB. She had a review back around here some place of the jogger mini...I recall she liked the stroller, but if you really like to walk a lot, I remember she said it could be a bit bumpy. I don''t think the city jogger has air tires. It makes a HUGE difference.

Blen also recently bought a BOB, although I don''t know how she (and George) are liking it.

The BOB takes grass, dirt trails, and uneven paths without even blinking. Eats em up. I can push and manuever with one hand, if not one finger on those surfaces. If any of the places you are thinking of walking have surfaces like that, I don''t think the city jogger mini is going to cut it. But that''s JMHO.

Oh, and looks...ha, well, I can say that most of the time, caring about looks is the first thing that is going to fly out the window when it comes to the kid!

TGal- The UPPA does the same thing with the carseat attachment. I think they charge like $45 or something.

I don''t plan on traveling/driving with the UPPA much, if at all, and that is why we are getting the SNG.

You know what is funny. I actually considered the BOB to be bigger than the UPPA. I''m not sure why, maybe it was because of all the stuff that was packed on it, when I saw it.

I think that probably what a lot of us forget is that travel systems seem like a good deal, so I can understand why people purchase them. Carseat (which Graco and Chicco are known to be excellent) plus a full stroller for a fair price. Not everyone has the means to buy a Bug/Uppa/whatever and even more, not everyone has access to actually check them out in person. Graco has travel systems for under 200 bucks. If you were to buy a snugride and snugrider separately, you''d still be paying about $150 and not even have a full stroller to use later.

My opinion though is if you have the means, then there are much better strollers/options out there. These travel system strollers just seem so clunky.

I agree. You HAVE to try them out for yourself. We all have different needs, wants, etc. Push them around. Fold them up. Lift them. I really searched for my perfect stroller after I decided to upgrade from my travel system. My BOB stays mostly open in the garage. I have a SUV so it fits in my trunk no problem. It also fits in my mom''s prius but don''t think it would fit in a normal size trunk. For errands honestly I rarely use a stroller. Most places I go has shopping carts so she always sits in there. The BOB is great for when we walk to Target/grocery store/ect . I bought those use clips used for rock climbing and clip my shopping bags on there. What amazes me is it pushes SO well even with a 30 lb tot in it. To me that is a test of a good stroller.

I don't really notice it being clunky, but we don't really use it very much at all. So, I might feel differently if I used it a lot. It's pretty much only used on a random trip to the mall or something. I'm sure there are better strollers out there but I didn't want to put a ton of money into one. I use to just carry jake into restaurants in the carrrier and we don't live within walking distance of anything so we just don't take him walking much. If I lived in an area where we walked to a lot of places then that might make a huge difference. But, for me it worked great.

On the topic of looks, it''s kind of funny - we were on a walk a couple of days ago when DH started talking about how our BOB looks a lot nicer the other strollers he sees (we tend to see a healthy mix of travel systems, Maclarens, City Jogger Minis, and high end strollers like the Stokke and Bugaboo). I said that some of the moms I know think that the looks are actually a drawback to the stroller, and then he started going on about how awesome and sporty it looked. So apparently it appeals to guys.

We''re loving the BOB. It steers like a dream. As far as the lack of pram option goes, George has always hated being flat on his back and I feel like others here have had babies who are the same way. He would have been comfortable with a 70% recline as a newborn, but not all the way on his back.

I''d also really recommend somehow obtaining a snap and go (borrow from a friend or get one on Craigslist for $20-30 if money is a concern) and then waiting until after the baby is here to make a decision past that. And also really think about how you''re going to use it. The first stroller that we bought really was not good for how we wanted to use it, and we ended up selling it and buying another. It''s less money and aggrevation just to do it right the first time.

Pretty much ditto to everything TGal said.

I am not a jogger but I LOVE the BOB, my DH loves the BOB, it is the easiest stroller to push. We use it for walks, etc. Otherwise we have a SnG and then we will use the Maclaren umbrella stroller soon.

We did get the infant seat adapter b/c 1) I didn''t know you could put the infant in it without it and 2) we started using the BOB really early.

If I wasn''t going this route, I would get the UppaBaby. I love it, but just don''t need all of that stroller. Actually, if I was going to get whatever I wanted I would get the Stokke Explory that Pandora has, which I covet for some reason. But I have no need for it where I live.

re: looks, yep blen i could see the boys loving the BOB. greg liked the city mini too for looks haha...sporty.

TG you are right that the city mini tires are not as fab as the bob''s esp for walking. that is also why i figure lets see what we want to do with the SNG. i am sure that within a few weeks that all the things we REALLY want will be highlighted for us because the SNG won''t have them.

so if we are like finding ourselves out walking an hour a day then getting the bob might make sense just for walks and SNG for everything else then umbrella later. or if i find that ''best intentions'' of walking are more like 2-3x a week then the bob''s amazing push and ride may not be as important and city mini might be enough.

i''m just glad we got a SNG lend to start because while it''s not expensive, i didn''t want to spend $60 and then have to keep/store if afterwards along with getting another stroller too.

i know i have said this before but to the newly preggo moms borrow whatever you can so you don''t have to keep it later hehe.

I love my BOB but it is NOT an in-and-out of the car stroller. We have a smaller one for that and it stays in the trunk, and the BOB stays at home.

We live in Manhattan and take the subway or walk pretty much everywhere so our stroller needs are a little different, and I could care less if something fits in a car
3.gif

I''m planning to babywear on the subway when we get pregnant ,and when the kiddo gets to heavy I''ll use a volo.

Other than that, I live in a really hilly part of the city with rough sidewalks and we love to walk/hike so I think we''d prefer the Bob for that.

Good to know about the infant seat adapter, we''ll skip that all together.

On that note, two questions for city moms....

1. How do you handle car seats and cabs?

2. Do you use protective headphones for the baby''s ears on the subway?

Most of my friends here are stay at home moms and don''t leave our neightborhood with their babies. When we have a kid they''ll need to come with me on the subway to the neighborhood where I work and that''s like a 30 minute subway ride. We don''t take cabs a lot, but do sometimes so I''m trying to figure that out...I don''t want to be a prisoner in the city with a baby, I want to be able to enjoy all the things I love about NYC, just with another liitle person:-)

Bella, I live in Manhattan as well so I'm more than happy to share my tips with you!

We started out with the Bugaboo and absolutely LOVED it. Still do. We also have the Volo as the lightweight travel stroller. Unfortunately, I had my 2 children very close together and Bugaboo doesn't make a double so we got the Phil & Teds. I highly recommend it, even as a single stroller. You can purchase the 2nd seat attachment separately and it's "inline" so it's not a bulky side by side which is important for us in the City--we need to maneuver around in small spaces! You can also use it from infancy since the seat reclines totally flat and is more like a bed. I know everyone raves about the Bob but you might want to check out the P&T as well.

I love my Bjorn and used it a lot, both in the house and outside. If I were having my first baby now, I'd probably get an Ergo but at the time, nobody had them so I didn't know much about them. But the Bjorn was great anyway.

Car seats and cabs. Um, I hate to say it but most people don't use car seats in cabs. It's not that we're reckless or willing to risk the lives of our children but it's just not something that anyone does here and it's not a requirement by the cab drivers. When you have a baby, it's easier to do the car seat thing because if you're just using a sng, you can pop the baby out of it in the car seat and just bring it into the cab and throw the sng in the trunk. No biggie. It's when they get older that it becomes an issue. I really have never seen anyone use a convertible car seat in a cab. It took me a long time to actually attempt it and it's not something I'm proud of doing. I'll admit that I don't take cabs very often with the kids--it's really just to doctor's appointments when it's cold out so it's really not a regular thing. Generally, we walk everywhere or take the subway.

Which brings me to your second question. I've never heard of protective headphones for babies on the subway. Needless to say, we don't use anything on the kids in the subway.

I hope you really take advantage of the City when you have your baby. Don't confine yourself to your neighborhood--get out and do things with your little one! It really is a kid-friendly place. I love being a city mom!!

Bella - I used the Bjorn in the beginning, but once my little guy started getting close to 20 lbs, no way could I use it (it killed my shoulders). Recently I bought the BabyHawk Mei Tai and LOVE it! Blen and Pandora talk about it a few pages back. My almost 8 month old weighs 22lbs, and he's VERY easy to carry in the Mei Tai. I don't live in the city, but in NJ, so I take the PATH w/ the baby sometimes and have used our stroller (BabyJogger City mini), it was great to maneuver in the city and had no problems even in tiny shops. I didn't use any plugs for my son's ears on the train.

thanks so much Curly!!! We''re TTC so I have lots of time to figure this out:-)

I looked at the P&T and thought it was perfect (esp. b/c we are planning on having several children pretty close together--God willing
2.gif
--until I tried one. For some reason the handlebar is too short for me and my feet hit the back of the stroller when I walk
39.gif

the I looked at the Uppa Baby which is great, but I think it''s more than we need, plus I want something that can handle jogging.

Since I want to babywear, I think we really need something for long walks and something for the subway/trips to museums etc. when the kiddo is heavy. So, I think the Bob and the Volo make sense. I''m hoping when we have a second (I know, I''m crazy to be thinking about that when I''m not even knocked-up with the first yet
20.gif
) that I can babywear the younger one for a year while the older one is in the volo and once they hit 3 they can walk:-) Maybe we''d get a double umbrella stroller if we went on a lot of trips that involved huge amounts of walking...other than that, DH can carry one in a hiking backpack and I could carry the other in a becco/ergo for a while. We''ll see how it all goes:-)

None of my friends use car seats in cabs, unfortunately for a few of them they are also ok with this when they rent cars/use zip car. I''m not sure how I feel about that. I never wear seatbelts in cabs so I guess it''s not much different, but it''s still kind of scary....and I always wear a seat belt in a rental car so I think car seats should be used there...

The subway, none of my friends use anything either but they rarely take it anywhere...I was just thinking if the kiddo is taking the subway twice a day for 30 minutes each way that''s a lot of exposure. I''m a musician so I''d like to not damage my kid''s hearing if possible
9.gif

I wanted to do a quick review of my new stroller in case anyone is ever interested.

I got the MaxiCosi Foray (Cello has one of these too!) and I love it. The seat comes off and fits my MaxiCosi Mico carseat wonderfully! The "4 step fold" doesn''t bother me at all. It''s actually more like a 2 step fold cause there are only 2 actions. It can also stand upright when it''s folded which is convenient. But it has a great size basket, not too small. I LOVE the foot brake, just one push to engage break and push it again to release the break. So easy. I love the telescoping handle bar. The cup holder can be worn on or you can take it off for a sleeker look. The canopy is large. Overall, it''s great. love it!

Bella, someone else here had the same problems with the P&T. I''m 5''3" and DH is 6''3" and neither one of us has ever had a problem with it. The handlebar is fine for us and my legs only hit the back if we''re going downhill. Try it out again if you can--I really think it''s the perfect NYC stroller, especially if you plan on having your children close together (which I also recommend!
2.gif
).

I did a lot of babywearing when my 2nd was little. She was not a good napper at all so I would just pop her in the Bjorn and walk. It put her to sleep every time and it was a good way to get some exercise for me! I would often wear her and push the other one in the stroller and I thought that was a great workout too!! It also came in handy with a needy toddler--I would just wear the baby and it kept my hands free for the older one. You''ll figure it all out when the time comes but just know that it''s doable!

The car seat thing really weighs on me every time I think about it! We would never drive in a car ourselves without car seats. When we rent cars, we always use them and if our parents come and pick us up, we are never without the seats. But the cab thing is another story. If only cabs came equipped with them, or stored them in the trunk, I wouldn''t feel as conflicted about it. I''m not sure why I trust a cab driver over my own driving either! I guess it''s just the assumption that a cab ride is short so chances are good that nothing willl happen, but you never know. It''s no excuse and like I said, we really avoid taking cabs with the kids unless it''s the only option.

Good luck with ttc. I''ll be following your story now and hope to give you lots of ideas from one city mom to another!

thanks so much curly!!! It''s great to know it can be done
36.gif

I will try the P&T again b/c I thought it was perfect for NYC too...which model do you have? (maybe by the time we have kids yours will be bigger and I can just buy it off of you
2.gif
)

I''ll post updates and will be over here a lot more once we get knocked-up for real (hopefully this month
3.gif
)

I think the cab thing I can deal with if necessary, as long as we use a car seat any other time and don''t take cabs a ton, but we''ll see how I feel once I''m actually faced with a kid of my own.
2.gif

thanks again!

(I''m totally going to try out the P&T again on Monday, I''m obsessed

Hello ladies...we are also in the process of TTC but being the control freak that I am, I have been researching strollers for months now. We will definitely get the S&G for the short trips to the store, etc. But I have been wanting a more high end stroller for longer outings. I have been pretty set on getting the UppaBaby. I started off wanting the phil and teds, but saw it in person and something about it, I didn''t love. Now I am kinda debating the bugaboo. I would have to fold it and get it in and out of a car at some point. We live in the burbs but do a lot of walking at the park and such. What would you recommend?

PS we will prob. pick up gently used on craigslist to save a bit of money.

Have you seen the Bugaboo in person?

Just so you know, the pram and the toddler seat do not snap in and out easily like the UPPA. They are completely separate attachments like the UPPA, but the Buggaboo pram is actually attached by like 10 velcro straps around the edge. So it is definitley not easily removeable, and not quick. We didn''t even bother to undo all of the them to see how the toddler seat works.

To be honest... I still have no idea why they charge what they do for the Bugaboo?

re buying some baby items on CL... i thought about strollers on CL and the like but unless stuff is totally brand new, i would be paranoid that something had happened with the stroller or car seat or whatever and it wasn''t working correctly or had been in an accident or something. how do you really know?

there were a few gently used strollers on CL i was looking at originally but i just didn''t feel totally comfortable with them. is it just me...too paranoid?

Carseats I think should be bought new (or from a friend where you know what actually happened to it.)

Strollers, if it works I think it''s fine. I''m not so worried about that.

FYI-If I were choosing between the bugaboo and the uppababy vista I would definitely pick the vista. Hands down, I think it''s easier to fold, less expensive, the bassinet/pram is fantastic and easy to take on and off, and I like that the kiddo is a little higher off the ground.

The BJ City select looks interesting too, but I haven''t tried it yet and I think once you add the price of all the extras that the UppaBaby is a better buy...but I''m not totally sure.

Reminder of the REI member sale For only $20 you can become a member for life and they send out 20% of coupons a few times a year. I saved lots of money buying my BOB this way. Here is what strollers they offer. They also carry the baby jogger city elite which is a REALLY nice stroller. Plusher than the BOB. Looks like they also started carrying the Phil & Teds Sport. The coupon won't work though b/c it has to be a full price item.
Catching up on this thread and question about the REI sale: do you have to be a REI member to get the 20% off BOB that I've heard mention of? Also, do they generally have the full set of colors at REI for this or more limited? I kind of have my heart set on the chocolate/blue one...

Thanks for any insight!

Yes but it is a onetime $20 fee plus I think you get a *small* portion of what you buy back. I have the chocolate/blue one. I can''t remember but think I ordered it online and shipped it to my local store. No problems. They also have an amazing return policy. If you are a member you don''t have to bring in a receipt and replace the entire stroller if something is wrong. Mine had a weird click and instead of fixing it they just gave me a brand new one.

Thanks, Tacori. Good to know about the REI return policy -- the no-tax option of Amazon is appealing but perhaps the return policy weighs in favor of buying it at REI.

Baby clothing question here: I''m trying to figure out how much and what kind of newborn, versus 3 month, versus 6 month clothing I will need. What do little ones wear as newborns? Can I get away with bodysuits (those little one pieces that have sleeves but no legs, like this: http://www.amazon.com/IPlay-Babywear-Organic-Bodysuit-Sage-Small/dp/B001C1MQ80/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1QBPCM6TT6H4S&colid=3F65CWA1Y7SDH and maybe socks) or do I need full outfits with pants? Is it better to have full "rompers" (one piece with legs and sleeves like this: http://www.amazon.com/Tadpoles-Organic-Double-Cotton-Footed/dp/B001DMTAI2/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2PER778Y7AFHD&colid=3F65CWA1Y7SDH)?

Does what type of clothes they need change over the first 6 months? Thanks for any thoughts -- this is my first and I''m kind of clueless :)

Wow those are expensive. I think you need a variety. Also depends what part of the year your little one is born. I personally only used zipper sleepers but it seems to be a personal preference. I would not load up on clothes though b/c in my experience people LOVE to buy your baby clothes. Just get some basics and you can always buy as you go along. I know some babies NEVER wore newborn. DD was smaller so she did for awhile. You are suppose to dress your baby how you would dress yourself. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Definitely depends on the season! Ds was born in July and lived in side snap/tie teeshirts, diapers, and swaddled for the first 2 weeks I''d say. At that point, he was already too big for newborn sized clothes. Then he lived in onsies and swaddled for another month. Then we moved to onsies and shorts or 1 piece rompers. And now that it''s winter, we do long sleeved onsies and pants or long sleeved rompers, or footed sleepers (he loves them and they are adorable). But we had tons of footed sleepers in 0-3 that he never even wore because he was always swaddled and it was too warm. I also wouldn''t really buy anything past 0-3 right away because you won''t know what you/your LO would like when they grow, how quickly they''ll grow, etc.

As for strollers, I''m still kicking myself for not buying a snap n go. We got the Graco travel system, and I use the stroller EVERY DAY (over rough terrain) when I take the dog on a walk while dh is at work, so I don''t regret buying that, but I wish I had got the sng as well because I HATE lugging the Graco stroller to/from the car.

Ds is big enough for an umbrella stroller, and we got one we LOVE (Combi Cosmo), but he often still falls asleep in the car seat, and he''s not close to outgrowing the carseat yet (snugride 32), so it would still be convenient to have the sng when out, but couldn''t bring myself to buy one at this late date (ds is 6 months already!).
