What is the markup on melee diamonds? One key?

Sure. Dealers charge whatever they can and they pay whatever they must. These aren't necessarily related. With most melee deals the costs of setting are as much or more than the costs of the stones by the way. Most jewelers don't even separate out the materials cost as something to bill separately but tiny diamonds range from about $250/ct to well over $1000 depending on the details of what you get and where you're looking.

I am with you on all you wrote and wanted to add..., the tiny-er the Diamond the higher the price-per-carat will be.
For example some nano full cuts used on high end watches can reach thousands $ per carat. And I didn't talk about fancy cuts yet..., there it gets even wilder.

Also agree with both Yoram and Neil. Prices can go well above $1000 per carat to buy "fresh goods" in sub 1mm sizes- super well cut single cuts are much more.

Plus the part about reclamation is very important to consumers. With such high prices you'd think people could do well selling their small diamonds.
But the nature of setting these small stones means that many will be damaged during removal- which is a labor intensive process.....
