I gave recently had a stone replaced by my insurance company. I didn''t have a diamond certificate on my original diamond but knew it was F and VS (not sure if 1 or 2).

The replacement stone is

Square Modified Brilliant
5.29 x 5.13 x 3.67
0.75 carat
G
VS1
Clarity - Feather
Polish - Good
Symmetry - Very Good
Flourenscence - None

Bear with me here as not sure of terminology!!
Table (top?) 76%
Depth 71.5%
thin to thick

My main question to you lovely people (my first post but I have been lurking for sometime) is that should I be worried about the feather on a VS1? Also would like to know whether this is a nice stone. I don''t expect it to be perfect. It is larger than my original stone. It is set in a platinum bezel setting.

Many thanks.

No, no reason to worry about a VS1 feather, maybe SI region and lower, depending on where and how significant.

The proportion is probably not good, but no way to be certain as there is no way to judge a princess cut by the numbers, generally requires an ASET image. From the proportions, generally it is preferable to have a depth greater than the table, table in the high 60s to low 70s range, depth in the low to mid 70s to get a better chance of a nice performing stone with a crown height of better than 10%, but again numbers will not determine how the facets work with each other, best to get an ASET image.

Link on what ASET is.

Hi greensleeves and welcome!

Generally VS1 inclusions should be fine but there are of course no guarantees. Your diamond appears to be a typical commercial cut quality Princess as far as can be told, but this is ok as not many are cut to top standards and you can find nice looking stones in this cut quality group. This is pure speculation on my part as it isn't possible to give you a meaningful opinion without images, in particular ASET - see Stonecold's link for more info.

I assume this diamond has a GIA report?

Thanks for your responses.

Yes it is GIA. I insisted on this.

Does this mean it will have less fire?

It is possible that the overall performance would not be to the standards of a very fine cut / top cut Princess. Are you unhappy with the diamond?

I am happy with it. I received the ring, having spoken to the insurance company who assured me it was a very very nice stone. At the time I was more interested in clarity and colour and that it was GIA graded. I then found this forum and realised there is so much more.

I didn''t receive the GIA report and valuation until after I had received the ring. This is when I noticed the feather inclusion (from the report). It does appear to be very sparkly and I''m happy with the size (living in the UK we have smaller stones). However, I paid quite a bit extra for the larger stone (I had to pay the difference), although I do appreciate that diamonds here in the UK are more expensive than the US. I guess I just want be make sure that I got a reasonable deal.
