I think it's very interesting that our latest royal to become engaged has had a 2ct oval Padparadscha ring given to her. In the news the ring is reported to be worth £7,000 (about $10,000). A jeweller has commented that the stone may not be natural (I presume they mean that it could be enhanced) due to "the colour". I have no idea whether it's natural and untreated or not but the price suggests it may well not be.

That jeweler just wants attention imho as you can’t tell a lab stonefrom that picture let alone heated plus she’s a royal id bet they can afford whatever pad they’re after

Just for info ......... the jeweller was anonymous so not looking for business and the fiance isn't a royal or particularly wealthy (just happens to be marrying a royal)! I think the jeweller's assumption is based on the fact that it's 2ct and purported to be Padparadscha. For £7k that would be a very good price if unheated/untreated and don't forget it includes the setting/diamond cost so I can see how they're thinking it may be treated etc.

But who reported it to be worth 7,000 pounds? I think nobody knows anything about her ring.

There's a whole thread about this ring in hangout. I expressed my concerns about padparadchas being really popular and expensive right now due to this ring. I fear vendors will sell inferior brownish sapphires or diffused sapphires at extremely high prices.

ETA: I opened this same thread in colored stones, but it was moved to hang out. Don't be surprised if this is moved to hang out as well, although I think it should stay here to inform consumers more about the pitfalls of obtaining padparadcha sapphires.

Your two concerns are exactly what I was thinking.

Is that a window I see?

Sorry I hadn't seen your thread TL. Why was it moved? That's a bit odd because it's a coloured stone! Great minds though eh? x

I think it's just the angle of the photo and the fact that it's a paler stone. The cut looks really weird though (quite high with a large table) and looking at those prongs I can't see how it's being held safely. Mind you, it's all probably down to the angle of the photo!

It might have somewhat of a window because natural padparachas are very expensive and I yet have to meet a precision-cut one.

I enjoyed the stone, the ring, and the the photo of Princess Eugenie with her fiance, and her dress! Princess Eugenie is a lovely young woman who took the best from her parents, in looks, at least, and yet she also has this simple and down-to-earth look of her mother. Very refreshing amidst all these new glamour royalties photos. And Duchess of York, as I remember, has a Burmese ruby for an e-ring. A beautiful stone.

I love that ruby too.

Well the BRF purchased the DoY's ruby ring. This gentleman may be of much more modest means, since 7000 pounds is not a lot for a royal ring. It's not even a lot for a top two carat untreated Sri Lankan padparadcha by itself.

In any case, I wish them the best, they've been dating a long time.

It has a very high crown, those prongs are not too safe.

Well, the benefit of it being not a royal ring is that she will keep it. The royal rings belong to the royal house, don't they?

Actually, Sarah, Duchess of York, has some taste in gems, and perhaps Eugenie has inherited it, too. The ring is not perfect, but it matches her skin, her hair, and I bet it is very lively in person.

Did her mother, Sarah, have a padparadascha sapphire in a floral halo also?
I hope the price of these gems doesn't jump too quickly as I have been inquiring to purchase one this year.

I don't care for gems that match skin tone, they don't pop on your hand. I guess that's probably why I'm not as attracted to padparadchas.

Love the peachy colour, the antique design, super high crown, and all. Not going to guess treatment from a photograph but it’s gorgeous.

$30k is more believable....$150k seems really inflated though? Imagine if someone came along and posted here last week a picture of the ring and said "I have the opportunity to buy this ring for $150k, is that a good deal", what people would have said....

I thought the original estimate seemed way too low.

I think the price has already jumped because now it has the provenance, lol.

(And the irony - who makes the waves and drags attention to two girls, very far in the succession line, and pretty ordinary, although, obviously nice? Their exuberant mom, Fergie. She is impossible - but her joie de vivre is amazing. So I bet it is her legacy that made the price skyrocket from decent 7L lbs to 30 - 150 K USD overnight. Maybe her tweets, even?)

I disagree - don't think the true value yesterday was $7K, just as I don't think it has gone up, because of provenance, to $100-150k overnight! I think the first jeweler was a bit out of touch as to the rarity of padparadschas and therefore their prices. If its really unheated, in its setting, I bet $30K - 100K isn't that far off the mark.

I think maybe just the angle of the photo makes the tilt window appear more prominent, perhaps looking directly onto it the window would be less obvious? Partly due to the cut of course. No idea what it’s worth but as long as she loves it that what matters!
