Promise Rings Anyone?

The tradition of the promise ring is pretty big here in the midwest. For those that don't know, a promise ring is basically a 'pre-engagement' ring. Generally it's just a tiny little thing (mine is 0.12ct, but many are just pretty bands in silver or gold) to signify an intent to eventually propose, which identifies the relationship as committed and serious (as opposed to a flavor of the month sort of thing that is so common these days.)

I was wondering about their popularity in other areas of the US and even outside of the US. I received a promise ring from my FF last
valentines day, and he intends to propose some time in the next six months. I'm asking because my FF is from the Northwest and the concept was entirely alien to him until he came down to Texas.. Oooh and if you have a promise ring, please post pictures!!

Really?! See now that is rather shocking to me. As I said, FF is from the NW so I figured maybe it doesn't reach that far, but I figured a place as close to Texas as Cali would have it! And thank you =)

Texas is still the south; California is just a bunch of crazies. Totally different attitudes about, well, almost everything!
 
Had one before my engagement to my ex, but that was when I was a loooot younger (19-20). I was (and still am) in crazy California. Didn't have one from current (and last!) relationship. He bought me a necklace that I still wear every day, but that's it. :twirl:
 
That's the only time I've ever heard of people getting them, when the couple is young.
 
Im in California, not sure why we are crazies but anyways..Promise rings are around here, its just a thing that is more popular with the younger crowd ie. 16-20.
 
I've heard of promise rings.

Actually, when my bf and I were dating for 1-2yrs, we got a couple ring, like matching bands. My ring has his name engraved in there and his has mine in there. One time we ran into his friend and he thought we're married because of the rings. :lol: Anyways, I lost the ring when I was in university. I was so upset.
 
I'm from California and my FF got me a promise ring on our 11 month anniversary. It was his way of saying that he would stay committed and that one day we would get married. We have now been together 4.5 years and will be engaged by the end of the summer and we will be getting married next summer. I still wear my promise ring on my ring finger and when I get my engagement ring I will be moving my promise ring to my right ring finger.
 
I'm a Texan! BF bought me this when I was 16 (which was a ridiculously expensive gift for a teenager and I can't believe he bought it.) But here we are, just past our 6 year anniversary. Wish I would have known more about diamonds back then! Who knows what quality this stone is.

Here is my .25c solitaire in white gold (from a maul store). Recently discovered it has an extremely bent prong. And it makes my fingers look chubby because it is sized at 6.75 and I think I wear a 7 now. Haven't been wearing it lately due to the fit issue and I am anxious for an engagement ring (next summer for 7th anniversary!) ;))

ETA: Please make notice of my newly NON-BITTEN NAILS! I have FINALLY stopped biting them after many many years (secretly, in preparation for showing off a beautiful ring someday)

That's such a pretty ring Chloe! And I have to say that is rather large for a PR too! :love: Yours is beautiful as well Paris, I love the heart shape! I guess I'm grouped with the 'young crowd' tee hee. I'm 21 and FF is 27 ;)) Paris, that's what I intend to do with my promise ring. So sorry you lost yours beezygal :((
 
I generally think of promise rings being a very young thing - 16-20-ish.

Neither BF nor I are from areas where promise rings are a big deal, so I'll admit to not understanding the appeal. But I think people should do what makes them happy, so my opinion doesn't really matter to anybody but me! :wacko:

I like your halo promise ring! Halos always add so much bling!

I've been thinking about setting the diamond in a solitaire pendant when I get an engagement ring, since the prong is bent and I don't wear it anymore anyway. And that way, it wouldn't just be left in a box all alone! :))
 
SO and I got "promise rings" on our 2nd anniversary, when we were 18 and 20. They were engraved silver bands from Zales. After about a year of wearing mine it became too small, so I stored it in my wallet. After QUITE a while, I took out my ring and it was completely tarnished! To the point of being unsalvagable. I don't know if that's Zales quality or if all silver jewelry does that, but anyway. That was years ago and now I'm holding out for the engagement ring. :Up_to_something:

Btw, in the South I have found them to be pretty common.
 
Texas and Cali really aren't that close together. Speaking as someone who lives in between them (NM). PRs are just done here with young couples--usually high schoolers or very religious people. I had a ring from my then-FF, but it wasn't a promise ring. Just a birthday present. :wacko:
 
I'm from Texan and in my circle promise rings weren't done at all - I don't know anyone who had one. So it seems to make a difference even in-state!

ETA - but all your rings are lovely!
 
I've definitely heard of promise rings, but I can't think of that many people I know who ever gave one/received one. I think it's a cute concept in younger relationships .. not to mention that I will accept just about any excuse for more bling :P
 
I guess there is variation even in Texas! I am of the younger group, and the both of us are also religious so that may explain that ;)) I also like the excuse for more bling lilly :lol:
 
SO bought me a ring for Christmas, I'm not really sure if it's a promise ring, but it's pretty (in my opinion).

And I think he figured out early on that jewelry is always the way to a woman's heart :love:

I bought him a "cigar ring" style band, the inside is engraved with 'Wiggle Wiggle." It's sort of our way of saying; "I love you," discreetly.

Both of us wear them on our right hands, but because his looks so much like a wedding band he gets asked all the time if we're married.

Edit: I just said "We wear our rings on our rights hands" and this is clearly my left. I broke my right wrist like 2 or 3 days before I took this. OH and please excuse my nasty hands, Florida girl here had never been in snow before. So much lotion was needed to rectify that...

My FF and I started dating at 16 and so even though we knew we would eventually get married we also knew it would be a few years done the road. But we liked the idea of having something that represented our commitment and future together, plus having a new piece of meaningful jewelry from my FF wasn't bad either :twirl:

I'm in the Midwest, and have definitely heard of promise rings, but it's been AWHILE. I attended college here, too, and can't rememer hearing about or seeing them since. I think it's a nice gesture, especially when a couple is contemplating marriage while they're still working towards their degrees, but other than that I can't quite see what the use for them is, unless one party is very worried over when an actual engagement will come and the other party wants to appease her/him.

I don't disagree with or dislike the idea, and I think everyone's promise rings posted here are very pretty. It just isn't something I would've asked for or hoped to have been presented with. I'd rather see my SO's budget entail only finances for an actual engagement ring, I suppose.
 
I live in North Carolina, and I have definitely heard of promise rings. None of my friends had them, but I heard about them somewhere (I can't recall where exactly), and really was into the idea in my late teens.

I begged my high school boyfriend to get me one that I saw, but he disappointed me by taking forever to get one, and then buying one that wasn't my style at all. It was two-toned (I only wear silver/white gold/platinum) and wayyyy too big, so I had to wear one of those ring spacer things.

Then, when I was 19, my first college boyfriend got me one. He bought the one that I wanted, and I loved it at the time (it was also inexpensive, but it was my size and white gold), but that relationship ended as well.

Now I am almost 24 and my boyfriend is 26. We are planning to get engaged very soon, and he asked if I wanted a promise ring awhile back, but I didn't want one.
 
Hmm...I like reading about stuff across the states!! I'm from Pennsylvania and I have not heard much about promise rings beyond high school age. One exception was a friend of mine who was 23 at the time receiving one from her boyfriend and I remember thinking that was weird (personal opinion). I do however, wear my grandmother's promise ring which is unique and beautiful. I'll have to get a good picture of it and post it as my "finger warmer" haha. ;))

Lots of people here have promise rings, but I really don't like them. I have told my SO that at least the first ring from him will be an engagement ring :) To be fair, I have lots of rings from my mother and grandmother that I switch out all the time, so I didn't need another one. He got me a blue topaz necklace that I wear all the time and I love it
 
I'm from the Midwest (IL, but NOT Chicago) and although I've heard of a promise ring, I've only known people in HS or College to receive them. After that most just save up for the real deal. I always think I'm living in a different part of the "midwest" that's spoken about on pricescope because the majority of my friends (middle and working class) have 1 carat diamonds, not the 1/2ct or less that people say is "traditional in the midwest", no one that I've known in my years has a promise ring as a grown women and people actually DO folllow fashion trends as they occur.. and not years later.
