Promise Rings Anyone?

I've received a couple promise rings in my day. Each one ended in a break up, so I'm not exactly a big believer in them. However, to each their own. Now I have the ULTIMATE promise ring and that is my wedding band which promises my dh will be with me until death do us part

From the Seattle area and I've heard of promise rings. Can't say that I've heard of anyone receiving one recently, but it was the thing to do when you were in HS. Personally I always knew the promise ring to be a curse, because anyone that ever received one, always broke up within a month or 2. When I was that age, I always told the guys I dated to not buy me jewelry. What are you going to do with it if you broke up? Pawn it? Guess I didn't have much faith in men back then

I got my promise ring from SO because we knew we wanted to marry each other, but we knew it was too early to decide.

I was engaged before, and he has been divorced, so we are being VERY careful to be absolutely sure this time around! From my previous engagement I had a promise ring and an engagement ring and when we split I gave both back to the ex, not sure what he did with them. I didn't like the idea of keeping any of it because although they are shiny and pretty it's the sentiment that counts to me, and with no sentiment, I had no interest in the rings.

I'm from the Chicago area and I definitely know what a promise ring is, but I don't know anyone that has one. I'm in the camp of just waiting for a real engagement ring... but I also wouldn't say no if offered another piece of jewelry hehe

Oh no worries Beezy! I'm (obviously lol) over the relationship. I can still say that I did love that ring while I had it, but now that I know more about diamonds (thanks to PS!), I don't think it fits my taste. It was a 0.73 center H color SI1 marquise that was WAY overpriced from a maul store. Here's a couple pictures:

I'm glad I found PS before we buy a diamond, or else my bf would have overpaid and I wouldn't have a beautiful diamond.

I'm glad I found PS as well. It's insane knowing now that the old ring should have been a good 2-3k cheaper than it was. I think it was an IGI cert as well which really makes it more of a .73 J-K SI1-I1 *shudders*

I live in north east England and we don't have promise rings here. Its a lovely idea though.

The simple answer is no. I live in CO and don't know anyone who has done it and to be honest, most people I know think it is something silly that teens do to make their relationship seem more important than it is. I am not saying this is the case, but that is they way it is seen in my area.

I've always wondered--are promise rings supposed to be worn on the left hand ring finger? If so, wouldn't everyone just think you were engaged or married? I was taught that no ring goes on that finger until you get an engagement/wedding ring.

My boyfriend just sent me a promise ring (.10 and from a maul store, but it is beautiful in every way possible), but our situation is a bit different. We know we want to get married, and he told me he's already trying to figure out how to make the proposal as memorable as possible, but he can't actually propose until next year. Reason being, is that he's getting deployed soon. I haven't seen him since May, but with the contact we've had made it clear to me that as soon as he comes home he'll give me the proposal and the wedding we both dream of. The promise with the ring is a "I promise I'll do my very best to come home safe so we can start to build the life we both want together" kinda thing.

So I personally like 'em. Plus, why turn down free bling?
