Hi all. I have a blue sapphire, 6ct cushion cut. It meassures 9.6 x 9.6 x 7mm. Ive attached a picture of the sapphire. I am designing a custom ring, but im unsure on how thick the prongs should be. Ive also attached an image of what the ring will look like. Any help will be appreciated. I dont want to base the prong thickness on the image, I just want to know what is best based on the size of the sapphire but maybe the image will help.

It's purely a matter of taste, how it fits with the design and also how many prongs you want to have ie 4, 6, 8 or more. For a fairly substantial setting (like the one you've linked to) delicate prongs may be too much of a contrast.

If you look at Leon Mege's work, he typically uses very very delicate prongs, shaped into a V. These look fantastic but can catch on clothes and generally need to be checked more often than other types of prongs as they can lift. Round blobby prongs are secure but probably don't look as attractive. I've also seen leaves used as prongs and all sorts of ornate filigree.

I'm sorry that probably hasn't helped but I do think it's about personal preference.

There is no one answer that fits all for your question. It is based both on the design itself and personal preference. The design you showed is a very substantial one, and thus, to keep with the overall look and feel, should have prongs to match. It would be rather odd looking to have skinny claw prongs to go with it.

Makes a lot of sense. Thank you both. I didnt think id get a reply this fast. I really appreciate the help. Ill post a picture of the ring when its done. :D

Agree with the other two posters so don't have anything to add there, but wanted to ask about your setting - did you design that yourself? I have never seen anything like that. It looks simultaneously medievalish and dragonish; like a cross between chain mail and dragon claws and scales, maybe? Great imagination!

Thanks, you hit it right on the nose. I was going for that medieval look. Yeah, I designed everything. All of my pieces, I design on my own. This will be my first attempt at stone setting and this first ring I will give to my mother.
