Purchasing First Diamond!!

Alright I made some progress! She can't tell the difference between H, I and J color and I am pretty sure really wants me to get her the 1.50 ct ( I am making it seem that 1.25 is all I can do) so I will try to get her 2 ct. She does not like the blue fluorescent and is completely obsessed with the cushion cut. I have been searching for princess hahaha glad I figured that out soon. I asked her to show me what kind of band she likes and she really really likes this one:

LOL! She is going to be blown away when you reveal a larger diamond than she is expecting, you are a sweetheart to try to get a 2 ct for her. So that's vital information, now we know she loves cushions and that gives us a good place to start. The question is, do we know what type of cushion she loves best, modern or chunkier in appearance?

If so then that's great, we just need to know which type she loves but I would definitely suggest watching this video from Good Old Gold, John made this video some time ago to guide consumers intending to buy a cushion. It's fun and very easy to follow and I think it will be helpful.

She definitely likes the chunkier look. Not a fan of the modern/crushed ice look but is OK with the hybrid as well.

just as an fyi, when you are ready to buy from GOG, they will source stones with your specific parameters-they are great to work with!

Yep, I am definitely going to work with GOG! Getting a lot of good vibes from their videos.

Most definitely, it's a good point to raise adl, if you can't find what you are looking for with in house inventory, contact the vendor of your choice and see what they can find for you, the vendors have access to countless diamonds and can very often source what you are looking for on request.

OK I will work with GOG. Anyone have experience with cushion diamonds of different colors and clarities that can comment on them? I will be looking at them first hand soon but just want to get a gauge on what everyone thinks is clean to the naked eye. Based on everyone's opinion here I will go for Ideal/Excellent cut for sure.

Jon at GOG is a top notch vendor and he will be able to guide you and assist with comparison. He can even provide videos when you narrow down to a few stones. Jon will also be able to advise you concerning the colour and clarity of diamonds you have in mind, sometimes SI2, as an example, can be eye clean and thus a perfect choice in some cases. But no way can we generalize unfortunately concerning the ' eye cleanliness' of any particular diamond as there are so many variables and even within the clarity grades, they are certainly not created equal. Some SI2 might be eye clean and others might not depending on the buyer's eyesight and individual tolerances. Same with colour, in cushions that are very well cut and designed with the maximum optical performance in mind, you could consider I or J colour but again, colour sensitivity varies, Jon will be the best person to advise you. GOG and some of the other vendors have superbly cut cushions and if you tell them you want a cushion cut to maximize beauty and optical performance, they will be able to assist you. Otherwise, don't go by labels such as Ideal or Excellent cut, these labels aren't applicable in cushions and even if they were, as with round diamonds, they won't necessarily guarantee you a well cut diamond anyway.

You are doing great here and you will end up with a fantastic stone!

What do you guys think about this diamond:

Looks good to me but seems a bit overpriced for the color/carat. What do you guys think?

That stone looks GREAT.

There aren't very many 'comps' for this stone, as it is a trademarked cut. That being said, for something totally unique and top-of-the-line, the price seems extremely fair.

If your budget allows for it, grab that stone!

I want to get it in a halo setting but am afraid that the color will stand out against the setting's stones. I asked for videos and pictures but what do you guys think?

Lower colors are popular in the August Vintage cuts, it lends them a romantic styling.

What a beauty! Can't you just do similar colored halo? What color metal will it be set in?

I think this is comparable. Much higher color: http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/1.50-carat-h-vs2-royal-chandelier-cushion-brilliant-cushion-cut-diamond-gid-156245.html Fantastic ASET. Gorgeous stone.

remember with cushions to compare spread not carat weight.

There is also this one: http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/1.68-carat-h-vs2-royal-chandelier-cushion-brilliant-cushion-cut-diamond-gid-119792.html which is gorgeous and also H color.

And this one: http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/1.70-carat-g-vs2-royal-chandelier-cushion-brilliant-cushion-cut-diamond-gid-141043.html

Personally, I'd take one of the two H's here if you are going to halo it.

I want the material to be plat and might steer away from halo now that you mention it.

If she wants a halo. Get her one if it's in budget. Settings are very personal. And all of the stones I posted for you are gorgeous performance wise and would look great in a halo. And ERD makes fantastic CAD halos that run around 3600. So ... in budget.

Thanks I will look into that! Anyone else know of a good place I can get halo settings for around 3k?

My top choice would be ERD based on information on PS. Whiteflash and Brian Gavin Dismonds also have very nice halo mounts but I think of them as specializing more in round brilliance, and I strongly suggest you buy stone and mount the same place. Google Old Gold carries Bevery K brand mounts that are very well priced and also look lovely with chunkier style cushions if you go that route.

I am close to biting the bullet. I did not expect to find a perfect stone so fast! I am currently talking to GOG to try and find the right setting and I will be going to NY to take a look at the stone and ring soon. The stone I am talking about is the cushion i posted from GOG. My gf says she likes the warmer look so it is perfect!

I would reserve that stone if I were you in case someone else grabs it, it is gorgeous and how wonderful you will be able to visit GOG in person! Also, there is a great pizza place very close to the store in case you fancy a spot of lunch....

I just ran into an issue! I showed my gf this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh0ad6dsDRk

And was hoping she would say that she liked the AVC the best but unfortunately did not! So frustrated LOL. She said she liked the one on the bottom right the most because it appeared the most shiny (which is weird because I thought that one looked the most like the crushed ice look she does NOT like). Any recommendations on stones with that cut? Back to square one :(....and i really liked that AVC too. I can't justify spending the extra money on the AVC if she can't tell the difference in quality or just prefers the other ones.

Alright never mind!! After watching a video on multiple cuts she said ultimately the AVC looks the best. I will be looking at some AVC at GOG next Saturday.

That's a relief! But even if she prefers a slightly different cushion cut, Jon might be able to show you others he has in stock in case she decides the AVC isn't for her.
