Hi everyone!

I am not very knot savvy, I''ll admit. I''ve wanted to go on so that I can look at some pictures, but it won''t let me see much without joining. However, I am worried that if I join my name will appear if people were to search my name. I don''t want to mislead anyone and have them think that I am engaged when I am not yet! Is there an option once you sign up to make your profile private?? Thanks for any advice!

You could read their privacy terms.

the only thing people will see is if you use a username that you use all the time
they arent allowed to display your name for privacy sake

i graduated with a degree in computers so my information is pretty valid :-)
i have a knot account as well and no ones said anything lol
i even googled myself and couldn''t find it so i think you''re safe

LOL I was about to google myself too...

it's such a good idea to google yourself
before i graduated college in december i did this and ended up taking down like 10 old websites from high school and changing my privacy settings on facebook and what have you. although my boss is laid back i don't think that picture of me and my friends on new year's eve would have helped lol

LOL--I have such a common name (very typical Irish name) that it is pretty much impossible to find me on the interwebs, even if you include my middle name. Lucky I guess? The way I did it on the Knot was to just give an initial for my first name. I know, totally paranoid.

I know that a lot of people on The Knot refrain from putting their last name anywhere on their bio or in posts.. I just put my last initial in when I signed up.. You could do that with your first name as well and make sure you pick a login name that is unrecognizable. If you use the same login that you use for everything people could search that and potentially find your bio/posts.

I’m just going to give you a little warning: when I joined The Knot so that I could look at venues to help a friend who IS getting married it became apparent to me within a few weeks that my name was sold to local vendors. I started to receive tons of engagement and wedding planning related mail. If you live with your SO it could be a little awkward if he gets the mail and there are all sorts of bridal related things in it.

Thanks everyone for the responses!

Keepingthefaith, after reading the privacy policy, I began to worry that what you mentioned above might be an issue since they pretty much say, "we are giving people your information." Oh well, I will just have to be patient until it is my time to sign up!

Ew, I didn''t know that... creepy. I haven''t gotten anything, but I think I used a fake address. 123 street or something. They''ll never find me!!!

This happened to me too. No idea if I'll EVER stop getting junk mail at home/spam in my inbox from them.
