Question about Wineberries

Our raspberry bush has really taken off this year, but I noticed that there are some other berries growing nearby. Clearly not the same, I did some research and it appears they are wineberries.

I read that they should be harvested in August, so is it too early to pick these? We have a groundhog who has a berry habit so I want to pick them as soon as possible.

TIA!

So funny you post this! Friends had us down to their house in MD a few weekends ago, and were showing us their "raspberries". This is what they have! I think they looked pretty different from the red raspberries I had seen before, but didn't know wineberries existed. #thingsIlearnedtoday

@lala646, that is funny, I mean, I am no expert but there isn’t another plant that has the distinctive brown hairy look to it that produces berries that look like raspberries. They are an invasive species apparently but hey, invasive species with edible berries works for me!

Wow, I have never seen these before.
As a kid in PA, we spent a lot of time in the woods or wandering through fields, eating blackberries and black raspberries.
But I don't recall ever seeing (or eating) these!

Yeah I was a bit skeptical because we also have false strawberries, so it seems we have quite a few things going on in the backyard. However I read that there isn’t a plant that looks like raspberries that is a danger to humans so that was a surprise.

We had some other berries that used to grow in the very back of our property that were also edible but there is poison ivy back there and I’m highly allergic so have to stay away. Just remembered they were mulberries.
