Question for the MEN on this forum...Pendants!

Guys...my last post on my own ring thread got me thinking about pendants. I had a nice one, felt too strange wearing it, and sold it. My question to you guys (and the wives of guys).

Pendants:

Do you:

A) Wear them!
B)Wear the 'right' one, if you saw it or had it made
C)Not for me, but for another guy, thats fine
D)No way, those are for chicks!

Oh, again, regarding men and jewelry, from the other thread - I've known/worked for a lot of very educated men in important positions that usually wear a ring and it goes great on them. I think it can convey - educated, smart, accomplished and some polish/sophistication while still being masculine.

My personal response would be C, but I am not a big jewelry wearer myself. Wearing my wedding band is about as jeweled up as I get, and it's only a cheapo KMart band just to have something on finger that I don't care if it gets beat up from wearing it to work. I suppose if a guy wanted to wear a nice chain and pendant, that would be cool as long as it didn't turn into a miniature Mr. T starter kit.

A) I have a few that I wear, but it's not an everyday thing. I do wear some sort of colored stone ring every day though.

It mostly depends on what kind of neck the shirt I'm wearing has. If it's a button down or a polo shirt, yes. If I'm wearing a t-shirt, it has to have a v-neck since I keep the pendant pretty close to the neck and don't like it when it goes over the "neckline". At that point, it becomes very bro-tastic and that's not me.

The more dressed up I am, the more aggressive I tend to be with the accessories. So if I'm wearing a sport coat, then I'll probably pair it with a scaled down raven skull http://www.etsy.com/listing/5787369...ip_to=ZZ&ga_min=0&ga_max=0&ga_search_type=all.

I also have the black spinel dog tag that you might have seen on JKT's site: bottom row, 2nd from the left. http://juliakaytaylor.com/necklaces.html I had Uli cut the spinel for me since I don't like how large most dog tags are on me in general. (I'm pretty much exactly average sized for an American guy, and find that most dog tags are about 1/2" too big.)

I don't have a really blingy one, since I'm not into the club scene. If this David Yurman Waves tag came in a smaller size like some of his other ones, I could see myself breaking down and buying it, though. I think the thing with guys and necklaces is that it has to be to scale of our frame. We have thicker necks and wider shoulders so we need to have bolder more geometric shapes. Layering of multiple shapes on a leather cord works too with smaller "charms" if you will.

You can work a lot of stones into the look as long as that's your aesthetic. Like multiple key pendants with stones in the top or bottom of it would work. (I'm throwing around necklace ideas for myself here too )

Architectural pieces with lots of metal work and well placed stones work too.

I'm rambling but...

Yeah I'd wear a necklace if it was right

Short answer? It depends.
1. The design is paramount.
2. Needs to fit the outfit / occasion. Probably not to work unless you have an "artsy" career.
3. Some people just look weird wearing a pendant no matter what.

Definitely yes on the "artsy" career. I'm a creative professional, so the other people I work with have piercings, tattoos, and so on. No one is going to raise an eyebrow at small bits of jewelry. Let me preface by saying I am by no means a Joe Jonas fan! LOL. I googled "mens gemstone pendants" and this picture of him popped up. The gemstone pendant he is wearing is the look I was considering, except I'd wear it closer to my neck like a choker almost. Im a store manager at a retail stone, my work attire is basically a polo or button down shirt, with the top button undone and I wear a T shirt under that, similar to Joe in this pic.

I often see women wear short necklaces but not men. Wearing it up that high calls more attention to it so it's not a good idea if you are concerned about looking odd wearing a pendant in the first place.

Very interesting stuff guys, and a lot of different styles. Mine would be more conservative..with just a stone and metal. I wouldn't do charachter types, or just metal, but I like seeing the different types out there.

Chrono...good to know re: length. I dont have a long neck though, so it may have to be more choker style and less a longer chain. It wouldn't be a chain at all actually, as I'd want a black cord I think. I dunno..see, the pendants don't have the same benefit of a ring, because you can't stare at a pendant when you are wearing it, unless its really long. haha.

I'm not a guy, but I think guys should wear whatever jewelry they like regardless of what anyone else thinks. This is my husband's one and only necklace. It's more of a casual look and since I don't think he'll want to pose for neck shots you'll have to take my word that it looks fantastic on him. I may give it a polish for him, but the tarnish goes well with the piece. It looks exactly the same from the other side.

Thanks. I've since added a couple more rings, but never got around to posting them due to travel. I'm trying to decide what to do about the next ring project. I have a couple of stones that need to get set, but I can't decide.

I've often thought of this same topic. Actually I don't own any jewelry except for a few watches and wedding ring.
I cut this stone a few years ago for a good friend of mine, King Errissson. He wears it all the time. Looks good on him. He certainly is the "artsy" type, as he is the percussionist for Neil Diamond. Below is a shot of King with the pendant along with another one that is all shells that are gold plated, performing at Madison Square Gardens.

Gene! With your love of gemstones, you don't want to have one on your hand to look at all the time? Or, you just see enough of them...lol. For me its not really the jewelry aspect as much as it is that I want to look at the stone. Thats why im a lot more excited about a ring than a pendant. Pendants are for others to see and rings are for you to see. I like my ring because when Im sitting here at work itis a chance to see one of my stones whenever I want. Thats the biggest benefit for me anyways.

Gene, how funny. I do the exact same thing with my stones. My family and good friends always ask me, "What's in your pocket today?" I enjoy taking them around in all different lighting and seeing how they look.

I wear a variety of different pendants, from the two i've made to a 70-year old sterling cross my Grandfather found over in Europe during WWII. I'm more of a ring guy, but I do wear pendants every once in a while. I personally avoid the barbed-wire, dog tag, blackened metal stereotype of men's jewelry, with what I wear and what I design.

Ha funny. Well the stone in my pocket is always in a padded gem case (shown in this picture), not even one of the glass top ones. The other difference is I own these stones, so if I loose them or somehow damage them, I don't need to worry that I damaged someone else's property.

I'm not a man but think that there are a lot of variants here:-

1. For men working in a creative industry then I think it's more generally accepted to wear jewellery.
2. For men working in a more conservative profession, a pendant may not be suitable. In my opinion it has to be very subtle.
3. The age of the wearer. For some reason, I don't like to see older gentlemen wearing pendants. Sorry I know that's a very ageist thing to say!
4. Younger men I think can get away with far more than older.

Men's jewellery is so much more limited in terms of design and I think it's a challenge to find a piece that looks good for everyday and a variety of occasions.
