Question on Chrysoberyl

I know many of you are owners of outstanding chrysoberlys...so I'm hoping you can shed some light on how it performs in different lighting conditions. In particular, I was wondering if it closes up a bit in certain lighting? I just received a greenish-yellow chrysoberl that is (if memory is serving me right) 3.69cts. When I opened the box containing the stone (I was inside my house viewing it in incandescent lighting) and the sparkle and color took my breath away. However, when viewing the same stone out in natural (very overcast these last few days) lighting, it seems to go a bit flatter. Would this be somewhat normal?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by closes up a bit in certain lighting. Does it become darker coloured and non-sparkly?

Hi Chrono, yes... that's exactly what I mean. The stone becomes a darker shade of green and sparkles less. I'm not sure if it's because it's so overcast, or if it might be the same in brighter sunlight.

My guess would be the lack of decent lighting (or sunshine, in this case).

Can you post any pictures of your chrysoberyl? :naughty:

I have a 3+ carat chrysoberyl that I have a thread on too. It behaves very differently in different light conditions. I think might be similar to yours, as it doesn't look its best in direct overcast light. It looks great in shaded indirect light though-- such as under a sun umbrella on a sunny day.

I think you're both right... My chrysoberyl looks a bit better outdoors today, now that it's a little sunnier. I'm at work right now, but I'll post some pictures tonight when I get home so you can see what I mean.

Thanks!!!

One cloudy sunless day and one bright sunshine-y day?

Okay, I'm back... I wanted to post these last night, but had to pack for vacation. Here's my chrysoberyl in my office at work and in overcast sunlight.

And one more in very, very dim lighting..... (Btw please ignore my diamond ring in the first set of photos, it's in dire need of a cleaning. Urgh.)

All gemstones change somewhat in different lighting conditions so you should expect to see some differences. However, some do have more of a personality than others and it may be that you will like it in some conditions and not others. This is why we tell everybody to assess their gems in different lighting conditions because it can make you love or just like a stone. I have a number of stones that I'll only wear at night or day because I don't like the performance in other lighting conditions. Can you live with it even when it's got it's dull coat on? (Figuratively not literally speaking)!

Hi LD, you know... I've thought about this quite a bit over the last few days and have to say... This is the first chrysoberyl I've seen in person and wasn't sure what to expect. I actually think that I can live with the duller coat in certain light conditions. I really love the sparkle I see most of the time and to be honest, if I'm spending a lot of time outside then I'm probably doing something I wouldn't wear jewelry to do.

It's a beautiful stone-- where did you find it?

Thanks! I'm growing very fond of it!

I purchased this chrysoberyl from Gemcal. It's the first stone I've bought from them, so I was a bit nervous. I emailed with Hemi beforehand, who was very patient and responded to all of my questions. I'd definitely buy from Gemcal again, as it was an all-around pleasant experience. ( I sound like a commercial! LOL But it's all true!)

erinl - Is this the chrysoberyl you were speaking of? If so, that's funny - I've admired it many times!! It's beautiful... Did you have it set??

Coco: Thanks for the compliment! I haven't had a chance to set it yet; I am thinking of setting it in a three stone ring and I cannot find the perfect sidestones....

Have you seen the sun yet? Does it perform better outside when the sun is out?
